Lots of state legislative sessions are wrapping up this week, but it\u2019s been oddly quiet around actual stadium news, leaving room for lots of spin doctoring and other questionable takes:<\/p>\n
Turns out today\u2019s conclusion of the Florida legislature\u2019s special budget session won\u2019t be a deadline for a Tampa Bay Rays stadium deal, as everything appears to be getting pushed off to even specialer sessions. Gov. Ron DeSantis said Wednesday that though there\u2019s only $50 million in the state budget for relocating Hillsborough College buildings to make way for a stadium district on what\u2019s now its Dale Mabry campus, there could be more state money later sometime<\/a>: \u201cWe can do more on the infrastructure,\u201d said the governor, adding, \u201cI think maybe over time you would do more to spruce up the campus because I think it could be something meaningful. And I\u2019m happy to support it.\u201d (Ed. note: Yes, DeSantis leaves office in January. Yes, presumably he knows this.) Hillsborough County Commission chair Ken Hagan, meanwhile, said his \u201cgoal\u201d is to hold county and city votes on a binding deal by a scheduled July 15 board meeting, \u201cor maybe have to call a special meeting right around there,\u201d which gives him around seven weeks to flip one of the four \u201cno\u201d votes<\/a> on the Tampa city council. Rays owner Patrick Zalupski has remained silent on the current stadium stalemate, but DeSantis stepped in to levy a threat on his behalf, declaring: \u201cMaybe if they don\u2019t want to do it, I know Orlando\u2019s ready, willing and able. I think you have Raleigh-Durham, Nashville, and those are great cities, but I\u2019d hate to see us fumble a team and have it end up in some of those other areas.\u201d Now that\u2019s what friends and\/or campaign donation recipients<\/a> are for!
\nSacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty and West Sacramento Mayor Martha Guerrero say they want an MLB expansion team once the Athletics leave town for Las Vegas, and West Sacramento is set to provide $1 billion in money for a new stadium<\/a> from property tax kickbacks, hotel taxes, and \u201cadditional sources.\u201d The city could spend $1 billion and it \u201cwould not impact the City\u2019s general fund or require a taxpayer vote,\u201d explained a joint press release, because it would \u201cbe generated solely by activity in the ballpark district,\u201d citing a figure that over 40 years, a ballpark district \u201cis projected to lead to $1.77 billion in new tax revenue.\u201d Citation extremely needed, but also even $1.77 billion over 40 years wouldn\u2019t be enough to pay for $1 billion in stadium costs up front, why can\u2019t our elected leaders math<\/a>?
\nPortland Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon will \u201cdo everything in his power\u201d to move the team if he doesn\u2019t get the full $600 million in public arena renovation money he wants, according to (checks notes) a sports talk radio host<\/a>\u00a0who runs public relations and crisis counseling firms<\/a>. And other NBA owners would allow it, he claims, because \u201cif he does relocate, there\u2019s a relocation fee attached to that.\u201d No, don\u2019t ask why Dundon would readily agree to forgo the $365 million already approved<\/a> by the state of Oregon and also pay an expansion fee to move someplace that isn\u2019t offering a newer arena even after saying he has no intention of moving the team<\/a>, PR isn\u2019t about answering your questions.
\nNothing new on the\u00a0Chicago Bears stadium bill as of this morning, but bettors have Arlington Heights, Illinois a 58-40% favorite<\/a> over Hammond, Indiana to be the team\u2019s new home, for whatever that\u2019s worth. (Very possibly nothing<\/a>.)
\nThe\u00a0Seattle Seahawks are for sale, which means it\u2019s time to ask if a new owner will want a new stadium<\/a>, apparently. Answer (courtesy of me as quoted in the Puget Sound Business Journal): A new Seahawks owner would be dumb to pay to build one themselves when they have a perfectly good old one, but \u201cif somebody else is going to buy you a new car, you\u2019re not going to say no.\u201d
\nNashville officials say spending $60 million on hosting the Super Bowl<\/a> after spending $1.2 billion to build a new\u00a0Tennessee Titans stadium<\/a> so it could host the Super Bowl will pay off; economists say LOL, just like always<\/a>.
\nThe Oakland Arena, abandoned by the\u00a0Golden State Warriors, is doing so well hosting music now that it doesn\u2019t have to work around the NBA schedule that it\u2019s drawing bigger concerts than its newer rival<\/a> in San Francisco. Just in time for private equity to buy it<\/a> and presumably ruin it<\/a>.
