{"id":342003,"date":"2026-06-01T22:06:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T22:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/342003\/"},"modified":"2026-06-01T22:06:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T22:06:00","slug":"fc-mother-and-daughter-duo-secures-the-same-scholarship-one-year-apart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/342003\/","title":{"rendered":"FC\u00a0Mother and Daughter Duo\u00a0Secures\u00a0the Same Scholarship\u00a0One\u00a0Year Apart\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"byline\">&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPosted on June 1, 2026&#13;\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>American Sign Language (ASL) major\u00a0Gizelle Fuentes\u00a0never imagined completing\u00a0her first year at\u00a0Fullerton College as\u00a0a\u00a0scholarship\u00a0recipient.\u00a0This academic year, she was\u00a0awarded\u00a0the\u00a0Doug and Ann Myles Family Osher Scholarship\u00a0\u2013 a scholarship\u00a0for\u00a0high-achieving\u00a0students\u00a0in the\u00a0humanities.\u00a0Just a year\u00a0ago, her mother, Marilyn Fuentes,\u00a0also received\u00a0the exact same\u00a0award.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gizelle and Marilyn are both Fullerton College students who are pursuing associate degrees in ASL. Although they\u00a0aspire to\u00a0different\u00a0journeys\u00a0and goals,\u00a0this mother and daughter duo\u00a0has\u00a0shared the joy of taking ASL courses together, an experience that brought them even closer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.fullcoll.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1000007131-1-scaled.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1000007131-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14727 lazy\"  data-\/><\/a>Gizelle and Marilyn\u00a0Fuentes\u00a0pose for a photo with President Cynthia Olivo\u00a0as they celebrate\u00a0their shared award, showing how Fullerton College brings families together to achieve their goals no matter where they are in life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For\u00a0both of them, the Doug and Ann Myles Family Osher Scholarship\u00a0became possible thanks to\u00a0the encouragement of\u00a0FC\u2019s faculty and staff.\u00a0In the 2024-25 academic year,\u00a0Marilyn was\u00a0nominated for the\u00a0award\u00a0by ASL Professor Eddie Gutierrez, while\u00a0Gizelle\u00a0secured\u00a0it\u00a0this year\u00a0among three other scholarships she\u00a0qualified for.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScholarships provide much-needed resources for students to remain enrolled at Fullerton College and graduate,\u201d said Executive Director of the Friends of Fullerton College Foundation, Dr. Lisa Nashua.\u00a0\u201cThe awards help our students understand that we believe in them and support their academic success.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A special-admit student,\u00a0Gizelle\u00a0started her journey\u00a0with\u00a0Fullerton College\u00a0in its\u00a0dual enrollment program. While ASL is her primary major, she also\u00a0pursues\u00a0welding, an interest\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0had since she was 8 years old.\u00a0Currently, she is working on her\u00a0associate\u2019s\u00a0degrees in ASL and automotive technology, as well as\u00a0a welding certificate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.fullcoll.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-01-at-7.43.50-AM.png\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-01-at-7.43.50-AM-1024x675.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14730 lazy\"  data-\/><\/a>Gizelle celebrates her award as recipient of the\u00a0Doug and Ann Myles Family Osher Scholarship at Fullerton College\u2019s 2026 Scholarship Award\u2019s Ceremony. An exciting accomplishment, the scholarship recognizes her commitment to academic excellence, intellectual\u00a0pursuits\u00a0and passion to help her communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her mother\u00a0Marilyn\u2019s path at Fullerton\u00a0College\u00a0includes her goal to enhance her interpretation skills.\u00a0She comes to Fullerton College with years of experience in the interpretation industry, having worked in\u00a0special education, administration in early childhood education in movie studios as well as an international nanny\u00a0in\u00a0English and Spanish.\u00a0She\u00a0was\u00a0also a recipient of the mindfulness certificate at the college.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother spoke seven\u00a0languages, so I\u00a0grew\u00a0up with an ear for language. I am fluent in Spanish and have been\u00a0an interpreter for many years,\u201d said Marilyn. \u201cI promised myself that I wanted to be able to interpret for Deaf patients and their families to the best of my abilities and I believe that in my time at Fullerton College, I am getting the best ASL core requirements\u00a0met.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0completing her\u00a0associate\u00a0degrees, Gizelle plans to transfer to California State University, Northridge to pursue a career as a\u00a0welder and mechanic with goals to\u00a0also\u00a0interpret for\u00a0Deaf and Hard of Hearing people\u00a0to promote more inclusive\u00a0workplaces where\u00a0all\u00a0feel welcomed and supported.\u00a0As she works\u00a0towards a career in\u00a0the\u00a0welding and automotive fields,\u00a0she\u00a0hopes\u00a0to improve communication,\u00a0accessibility\u00a0and\u00a0advocate\u00a0for\u00a0Deaf and Hard of Hearing people in both industries.
