The board says Fryday’s record on affordability, education access and service programs makes him the strongest choice for a role that is far more than ceremonial.

FULL STORY: <a href="https://www.sacbee.com/opinion/election-endorsements/article315590933.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:The lieutenant governor is more than a backup. Here’s the best person for the job | Opinion

Here are key takeaways:

The lieutenant governor is more than a backup to the governor. The role includes presiding over the state Senate and voting seats on the UC Board of Regents, CSU Board of Trustees, the California Community College Board of Governors and Calbright College Board of Trustees.

Fryday is a former Novato mayor and Judge Advocate General’s Corps lawyer who now leads California Volunteers, which the Bee reports has grown into the largest service corps in the nation — bigger than the Peace Corps — providing more than 10,000 jobs annually.

His endorsements include Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, former Sen. Barbara Boxer, former Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, the California Teachers Association and California Environmental Voters.

Other candidates in the race include state Treasurer Fiona Ma, former Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs and Republicans David Fennell and Gloria Romero. The Bee notes Ma’s term was marred by a sexual harassment lawsuit that ended in a $350,000 state settlement.

The board says Fryday stood out in interviews by focusing on California’s affordability gap, proposing cheaper access to higher education and expanding state service corps programs.

The summary points above were compiled with the help of AI tools and edited by journalists.
