California Reps. Scott Peters (D) and Kevin Kiley (R) are pressing House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to call lawmakers back to Washington<\/a> as the government shutdown persists into a second month \u2014 leaving legislative business largely on hold.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to be talking,\u201d Peters said during an appearance on NewsNation\u2019s \u201cThe Hill\u201d with host Chris Stirewalt. \u201cI\u2019ve been through three long shutdowns. This is the first time Congress has shut down.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn previous shutdowns, we had to be in Washington, D.C. We couldn\u2019t go home. They would call votes to keep us there,\u201d he continued. \u201cThey wouldn\u2019t let us fly home on our government ticket,\u201d Peters continued. \u201cWe\u2019d have to pay out of our pockets.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, that created an atmosphere where we were talking every day about how to end this,\u201d Peters added.\u00a0\u201cSpeaker Johnson sent us all home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson pledged last month that he would not call the House back into session<\/a> until government is reopened. He has kept that promise, despite pushback<\/a> from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.<\/p>\n

The Senate failed for a 13th time<\/a> earlier this week to reach the 60-vote threshold needed to advance the stopgap funding bill. On Friday, the Speaker canceled another week of votes, declaring a \u201cdistrict work period\u201d for the sixth time.<\/p>\n

Kiley, in a separate appearance on \u201cThe Hill,\u201d aired his frustration over the decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it was ever justified to cancel our legislative session days,\u201d he told Stirewalt. \u201cAnd so, it was just announced that next week, for the sixth consecutive week, the House was supposed to be in session and is not going to be in session.\u201d<\/p>\n

The California Republican<\/a> said the six-week break has limited lawmakers\u2019 \u201cability to do whatever it takes to get the country out of this mess or to even pass bills.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelly specifically criticized the lack of oversight hearings, legislative markups and ordinary business during the shutdown and said it\u2019s not a matter of \u201cmaximizing leverage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s a matter of just not taking advantage of the opportunities we have to legislate on behalf of the people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Concerns over the lack of action in the lower chamber of Congress spilled out into the open<\/a> on a House GOP conference call earlier this week as lawmakers question how they will make up for lost time.<\/p>\n

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who has been openly critical<\/a> of Johnson\u2019s handle<\/a> on the shutdown, has echoed<\/a> Kiley\u2019s concerns.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think anybody is winning here, and I think it\u2019s failure, and I personally don\u2019t like it,\u201d she told CNN<\/a> during the second week of the shutdown.<\/p>\n
