The incident lasted about 15 hours before federal agents rescued the hostages and fatally shot the suspect.

Former FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge in Las Vegas, Ray Johnson, said the Bakersfield case stood out because of the suspect’s suspected intent to take multiple hostages from the outset.

“It was one of those that you see out of the movies at times,” Johnson said.

Johnson said most hostage situations begin much differently, often evolving from domestic disputes, robberies, mental health crises or other incidents that escalate unexpectedly.

“Typically, what you see in what we would call a hostage situation is a domestic violence situation, a drug transaction, or some scenario where a robbery or other criminal incident occurs,” Johnson said.

Metro Police responded to a domestic disturbance on the strip in July 2023 that escalated into a barricade and drew national attention. Police accused then 35-year-old Matthew Mannix of holding a woman against her will inside a room at Caesars Palace, triggering an hours long standoff that shut down part of the Las Vegas Strip.

Video showed furniture and other items being thrown from a broken hotel window before the suspect surrendered to authorities.

While the incident unfolded at one of the city’s most recognizable resorts, retired Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Randy Sutton said the tactics and strategies used by law enforcement mirror those employed in barricade and hostage situations throughout the valley.

“Hostage situations in the Vegas Valley are not all that rare, but they’re not the common thing that happens,” Sutton said.

Sutton said many cases involve barricaded suspects who refuse to surrender after police respond to a call, often during domestic violence investigations or other volatile situations.

Johnson and Sutton said coordination among local, state and federal agencies plays a critical role in resolving hostage and barricade situations.

Johnson described cooperation between Las Vegas-area law enforcement agencies and federal partners as “second to none,” while Sutton said the FBI can provide additional resources and expertise when a case involves a federal crime, terrorism concerns or other circumstances requiring federal involvement.

Johnson said situations involving someone entering a location with the apparent intent to seize multiple hostages remain “few and far between.”

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Bakersfield standoff reflects uncommon type of hostage situation, experts said A hostage standoff in…

[35
151,153,152
post-345781","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-bakersfield","tag-bakersfield","tag-bakersfield-headlines","tag-bakersfield-news
["GET
