Miya Delgado said she is all too familiar with the city’s bumpy roads.

“You hear a ‘thunk,’ and then I’m like, ‘Ah,’ it hurts my car,” she said. “Yeah. I just think it does damage to my car.”

She said it’s a topic often on her mind.

“I drive a Nissan, so it’s super low, and I was just actually just talking to my mom about that,” Delgado said. “We were on the way here and I was like, ‘You can feel every single thing,’ especially a pothole.”

That’s why the city of Sacramento’s Department of Public Works spent the past couple of months cracking down on this problem.

“We all know that the roads are Swiss cheese,” District 4 City Councilmember Phil Pluckebaum said. “Our new city manager, Maraskeshia Smith, got here, took that feedback and right away, hit the ground — literally — filling those potholes as fast as you can.”

According to Sacramento city leaders, crews used pavement condition data, resident service requests and district surveys to figure out which areas to target. Crews filled more than 7,700 potholes across Sacramento. District 4 saw the highest number of repairs with 1,981 potholes filled.

“We get a high volume of traffic here,” Pluckebaum said. “Anywhere that you have high volumes of heavy vehicles, the roads are going to get degraded faster.”

District 2 saw the second largest number filled with 1,597 repairs. District 1 had the fewest repairs with just 264.

Pluckebaum said this is a step in the right direction, but he added that it’s more of a Band-Aid to the problem as the city works toward a long-term solution.

“The best use would be to have a robust maintenance cycle such that we didn’t have roads failing and a need for filling potholes,” Pluckebaum said. “If we were touching our roads every 5 to 7 years and just doing a light coating … or some resealing, a lot of that maintenance wouldn’t be required.”

Pluckebaum also discussed funding these types of projects.

“What we need to do now is pass the sales tax measure this fall, or something like it, such that we can do the kind of road maintenance that we would need to do,” Pluckebaum said.

Delgado said she has not noticed a significant difference in the roads yet, but she’s happy this is a priority.

“I think it’s great because I feel like our money should go into it, honestly,” Delgado said. “It causes issues for my car and then I spend money on it.”

City officials said maintenance efforts will continue as part of Sacramento’s infrastructure improvement program. People can still report potholes by calling 311.

Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
