THIS EVENT CELEBRATES FILIPINO HISTORY AND CULTURE WHILE SHOWCASING CONTRIBUTIONS OF OUR FILIPINO COMMUNITY. AND IT IS A BIG COMMUNITY IN THE SACRAMENTO AREA. KATHLEEN ESPARTO AND MARIE NAVARRO JOINING ME HERE ON THE PATIO. AND THEN OVER THERE, WE\u2019VE GOT DONNY MACHINE. HE\u2019S BROUGHT SOME VERY COOL CARS. DONNY, WE\u2019LL GET TO YOU IN JUST A MINUTE, BUT LET\u2019S GET STARTED WITH KATHLEEN. KATHLEEN, YOU BROUGHT THE LUMPIA, SO YOU GET TO START. YES I DID. WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT EACH YEAR? BECAUSE I MEAN, LIKE, REALLY LIKE WHEN YOU THINK OF FILIPINO CULTURE, FOOD IS ALWAYS THE FIRST THING I THINK OF THE FOOD, JUST THE ENVIRONMENT, THE PERFORMANCES, JUST THE WHOLE TOGETHERNESS. YEAH. AND YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FESTIVAL IN THIS AREA FOR LIKE DECADES NOW. I BELIEVE. SO THIS YEAR WILL BE MY FIFTH YEAR, IS THAT RIGHT? AND WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT IT? BECAUSE IT\u2019S NOT JUST PEOPLE. THE FILIPINO COMMUNITY COME OUT. IT\u2019S PEOPLE WHO ENJOY FILIPINO CULTURE AND WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT IT TOO. AND IT\u2019S A GREAT PLACE TO BRING YOUR WHOLE FAMILY OUT TO. I JUST LIKE I SAID, I JUST LOVE THE ENVIRONMENT, YOU KNOW, EVERYONE IS NICE, WELCOMING, JUST BEING TOGETHER, YOU KNOW, PARTY, JUST ONE BIG FAMILY PARTY. THAT\u2019S WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO ME. YEAH. SO LUMPIA IS PROBABLY THE, THE THING THAT MOST PEOPLE ARE FAMILIAR WITH. HOW MUCH DO YOU GUYS MAKE FOR THIS? I CAN\u2019T EVEN IMAGINE. I WILL PROBABLY HAVE ABOUT 8 TO 1000 800 TO 1000 LUMPIA FOR THIS. WOW. HOW MUCH DO YOU PERSONALLY HELP OUT WITH? DO I DO IT ALL? YOU DO ALL I DO THE COOKING, THE ROLLING. SO, MARIE, TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT LIKE, YOU BRING A LOT OF DIFFERENT VENDORS OUT THERE. I MEAN, LIKE UP TO LIKE 80 DIFFERENT VENDORS. YES WE ARE. WE WILL BRING A LOT OF VENDORS IN DIFFERENT VARIETIES. WE HAVE THE FOOD, WE HAVE ORGANIZATIONS. AND THIS YEAR WE ARE TRYING TO WORK OUT WITH OUR HONOREES. WE HAVE WE ARE HONORING FIVE ORGANIZATIONS WHO WORK OUT WITH OUR COMMUNITY HERE IN SACRAMENTO. THAT\u2019S GREAT. AND WE HAVE OCAACCARI. YOU HAVE MY SISTER\u2019S HOUSE AND CAPITAL. THAT\u2019S GREAT. I\u2019M SURE THEY\u2019RE LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT. I KNOW IN MY HOUSE I\u2019VE GOT TWO KIDS, DONNY, AND THEY WOULD BE FLIPPING TO SEE THIS. HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU HAVE OUT THERE FOR THE EVENT? WE\u2019RE LOOKING AT A LITTLE OVER 100 CARS RIGHT NOW FOR PRE-REG. YOU CAN STILL PRE-REG UP UNTIL SATURDAY NIGHT. This year will mark the Philippines’ 128th Independence Day.The Filipino Fiesta started in 1977 and is attended by roughly 8,000 people each year. Eighty vendors will take part this year. Kathleen Rapisurda-Pardo has volunteered with Fiesta for five years. She loves celebrating her Filipino heritage.”It feels like one big family party,” she said. Rapisurda-Pardo’s job is to make lumpia. She says, “I’ll probably prepare anywhere from 800 to 1,000 lumpia.” This is the largest Filipino celebration each year in Sacramento. All are welcome.
