San Franciscans who gritted their teeth through\u00a0weekend closures<\/a> on 19th Avenue must now brace for more, Caltrans officials said Friday.<\/p>\n

This month the agency will shut down lanes overnight Monday through Friday between Lincoln Way and Holloway Ave. Crews will paint brighter stripes along the three-mile strip of freshly paved road and then make electrical upgrades to finish the project.<\/p>\n

The work entails saw-cutting and installing electrical detector loops, which are sensors embedded in the pavement that detect when a car is waiting at a traffic signal. These instruments will be added at Winston Drive, Sloat Boulevard, Vicente Street, Lincoln Way and Quintara Street.<\/p>\n

Closures are scheduled to last from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and could cause some inconvenience for drivers, Caltrans spokespeople acknowledged. They assured, however, that the electrical work will not be too noisy.<\/p>\n

Although the 19th Avenue Rehabilitation Project<\/a> caused some disruption on a busy corridor between Golden Gate Park and San Francisco State University, the effort was critical to maintain the health of a city artery that is also a state highway. In addition to fixing the roadbed workers will improve the traffic detection system, which counts the number of vehicles passing through.<\/p>\n

Later this summer Caltrans will repave the intersection of 19th Ave. and California Street in the Richmond district.<\/p>\n
