A Long Beach family is desperate to find their beloved parrot that was stolen by thieves in the middle of the night.

Owner Randi Winter said the bird was taken from his cage on June 5 around 3 a.m. Security cameras captured the hooded suspects walking up to the home on Cortner Avenue.

They broke a lock on the cage door and threw a covering over the bird before grabbing the animal and fleeing the scene in a getaway car.

Winter said the bird, named Harley, is a 30-year-old Yellow-naped Amazon. An intelligent species, Harley speaks English and Spanish and has a rich vocabulary consisting of hundreds of words.

Winter bought Harley from a Redondo Beach pet shop in 1996 and said the parrot has remained a beloved part of his family and daily life.

Harley was initially housed inside the home, but Winter said that after his wife experienced allergic reactions, he moved the bird cage outdoors, next to his front door.

Although Winter said he moves Harley inside during the winter, for the most part, the bird lives outside and he hasn’t experienced any issues.

Winter said he and his family are heartbroken. They are offering $5,000 for Harley’s safe return. They’ve also posted flyers of the bird around their community, hoping someone may have spotted him.

“It makes you very emotional,” he said. “When you see the burglars and what they did. I just never thought that would happen.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Long Beach Police Department at 562-570-7260 or they can text or call Winter at 949-229-2402.
