Jim Doti\u00a0put his mind to work writing the 2025 book, \u201cUsing Data Analytics to Drive Transformational Change.\u201d<\/p>\n
The president emeritus of\u00a0Chapman University\u00a0and noted economic scholar used the book to detail how analytic tools were used to transform and improve the Orange-based university during his 25-year presidency, touching on everything from student selectivity to establishing new school programs to real estate investments to faculty salaries.<\/p>\n
Doti put his body to work researching his latest book,\u00a0\u201cAn Adventure Log: A Chronicle of Climbing, Running, and Biking,\u201d which came out in April.<\/p>\n
The book features over two dozen entries from Doti and other authors about their experiences climbing the world\u2019s tallest mountains, competing in marathons and other endurance races, and other sporting endeavors.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe authors of these articles all have day jobs,\u201d said Doti \u2013who has completed 60 marathons and climbed five of the world\u2019s Seven Summits\u2013in the book\u2019s preface.<\/p>\n
\u201cSomehow, some way, they carved out enough time to experience and then record their adventures, pushing against the boundaries that often constrain the range of life\u2019s offerings.\u201d<\/p>\n
Among the contributors are Doti family members and fellow academics, including Doti\u2019s successor at Chapman,\u00a0Daniele Struppa, another mountain climbing enthusiast.<\/p>\n
Doti put on his economist hat for one story in the book, which \u201cdelves into the physiology of running by using statistical analysis to measure the impact of age on running times.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cInstead of training harder to fight the relentless effects of aging, I\u2019ve learned to not only accept the slower paces but be grateful that I\u2019m still in the game,\u201d Doti said.<\/p>\n

With over $51 million in sales at its eight West Coast locations last year, Newport Beach-based\u00a0Bluewater Grill\u00a0last month made its first appearance on our list of OC\u2019s largest restaurant chains, placing No. 26.<\/p>\n
Another first for the chain: a cookbook.<\/p>\n
\u201cFlavors from the Shore: Nostalgic Seafood Recipes Celebrating Our Coasts & Waterways\u201d\u00a0includes 100 recipes, organized geographically. It was written by Bluewater\u2019s co-founders\u00a0Jimmy Ulcickas\u00a0and\u00a0Richard Staunton, and the recipes were adapted for home cooks by the chain\u2019s executive chef,\u00a0Albert Serrano.<\/p>\n
The book\u2019s April release coincides with Bluewater\u2019s 30th anniversary. Its original location in Cannery Village, the chain\u2019s only OC spot, was recently updated.<\/p>\n
Business Journal\u00a0Editor-in-Chief\u00a0Peter J. Brennan\u00a0has excerpted plenty of books from OC execs over the years in our back-page\u00a0Leader Board\u00a0section. But he\u2019s yet to excerpt himself.<\/p>\n
Maybe that will change.
