ANAHEIM, Calif.\u00a0\u2014 Jose Altuve sized up the situation and opted for aggression. A frustrating night for the\u00a0Houston Astros<\/a>‘ offense threatened to peak. Altuve put his head down and charged forth.<\/p>\n Angels second baseman Nick Madrigal caught Jake Meyers\u2019 pop-up 182 feet from home plate in shallow center field. Altuve bolted from third base. Flat-footed, Madgrial set himself for a throw. It beat Altuve to the plate but on a short hop that skipped past catcher Logan\u00a0O\u2019Hoppe.<\/p>\n \u201cI think that was kind of like a bad play with a good result,\u201d Altuve said. \u201cEnded up winning the game so I\u2019m going to take it.\u201d<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n Altuve slid in safely. It proved the decisive run in a 5-4, 10-inning Astros win over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night, one that hinged on a series of late moments.<\/p>\n Brice Matthews authored one in the bottom of the 10th. Jose Siri began it with a single to left field. Mike Trout, the Angels\u2019 extra-innings runner, motored around third base as Matthews corralled the ball and fired a one-hop throw to home plate. Catcher Collin Price, making his second MLB start, applied a swipe tag to preserve a lead.<\/p>\n \u201cJust try and make a play\u00a0\u2014 gotta let it eat sometimes, man,\u201d Matthews said. \u201cI had my guy back there at the plate and he made a good play, so we got the out.\u201d<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n An Angels challenge went for naught. Bryan Abreu notched the final two outs. And Houston improved to 31-37, winning the opener of a series at Angel Stadium against the team with the AL\u2019s worst record.<\/p>\n Down 4-3 entering the ninth, the Astros forged a tie. Jeremy Pe\u00f1a worked a leadoff walk against Kirby Yates. Yordan Alvarez whiffed at a splitter for a strikeout, his third of the night. Pe\u00f1a stole second base with Christian Walker at the plate.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve got to take chances,\u201d Pe\u00f1a said. \u201cI felt like I had a good beat on Yates. And we\u2019ve got to play aggressive, we\u2019ve got to manufacture runs. We knew it was a low-scoring game.\u201d<\/p>\n Walker won a seven-pitch at-bat, lining a fastball up the middle to score Pe\u00f1a. Houston had been 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position to that point. Walker drove in his 48th run of the season, tying him with Alvarez for the team lead. Alvarez began the day leading the American League in that category.<\/p>\n Josh Hader, in his third outing back from the injured list, struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth, sending the Astros to extras for the sixth time this season. Matthews began the top of the 10th\u00a0with a bunt that Angels third baseman Denzer Guzman fielded just as it appeared to go foul, allowing Altuve to take third base and setting up his dash.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n \u201cWhen that ball took Madrigal back, and that last step before he caught that ball he\u2019s on his heels, Altuve\u2019s going to try,\u201d Astros manager Joe Espada said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s a really good aggressive play. You have to force the issue. And it got everybody fired up. That was a big play by a really good player.\u201d<\/p>\n Spencer Arrighetti toted a 1.94 ERA into his 10th start. Angels right-hander Grayson Rodriguez entered with a 9.50 ERA in four outings. Arrighetti nearly did not escape the second inning. Rodriguez held the Astros to one run until the sixth.<\/p>\n Arrighetti labored through a 34-pitch, three-run second. But he recovered to work four more innings, while his offense erased the deficit. Walker struck an RBI double in the second. LaMonte Wade Jr. and Cam Smith delivered back-to-back RBI doubles in the sixth to forge a 3-3 tie.<\/p>\n Enyel De Los Santos drew the seventh having allowed one earned run over his last 13 appearances. He had given up one home run in 27 innings this season. Zach Neto unloaded on a slider for the second, a 395-foot drive that just cleared the wall in left-center field.<\/p>\n Neto declared himself sure, flinging his bat toward his dugout and backpedaling a few steps to first base while the ball traveled. Matthews retreated to the wall in left-center, leapt but came up empty, validating Neto\u2019s certainty. He threw 43% of his pitches in zone, per Baseball Savant, and missed wildly at times. He harnessed enough command to author a quality start.<\/p>\n Briefly, it appeared he might not escape the second inning. Arrighetti spun a six-pitch first. He used 34 pitches in the second, as the Angels sent nine men to the plate.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n Arrighetti plunked Jo Adell with an errant sweeper to start the inning, a hint of the labor to come. He allowed back-to-back one-out singles to Nick Madrigal and Trey Mancini, the latter scoring Adell. Two batters later, Logan O\u2019Hoppe pulled a double sharply up the third-base line, driving in two more.<\/p>\n Both Mancini and O\u2019Hoppe recorded their hits on two-strike curveballs. Right-handed hitters had been just 1-for-21 against Arrighetti\u2019s curveball this season entering the day. He had allowed only one extra-base hit in a two-strike count. Up 3-0, the Angels threatened for more.<\/p>\n Arrighetti walked Neto and Mike Trout, filling the bases. AJ Blubaugh began to warm in the Astros bullpen. On his 34th pitch of the inning, Arrighetti froze Wade Meckler with a third-strike fastball.<\/p>\n \u201cI just wish the ball went at somebody in the second inning\u00a0\u2014 felt like I could have been out of there cleaner,\u201d Arrighetti said. \u201cIt\u2019s baseball. Got a bunch of contact that I thought could have been outs. Obviously, I didn\u2019t necessarily handle it the best, with the exception of Neto and Trout. Those guys are awesome hitters that can leave the yard at any time. I feel like pitching conservatively to them was the right thing to do.<\/p>\n \u201cOverall, I feel like it was really good. It was a grind being able to get to the sixth inning, finish the sixth inning still, give the team a chance to come back and win it\u00a0\u2014 and obviously, we did.\u201d<\/p>\n Wade exits with injury<\/p>\n Wade Jr.,\u00a0signed by the Astros last Thursday<\/a>\u00a0and making his third start with the team, exited in the sixth inning after appearing to injure himself running out a run-scoring double.<\/p>\n Wade pulled a fastball into the right-field corner and appeared to hurt himself as he prepared to round first base. He reached second but promptly left the game with an athletic trainer.<\/p>\n The Astros said Wade left the game due to \u201cright hamstring soreness.\u201d Espada said postgame that Wade was \u201cpretty sore \u2026 so we\u2019re going to get him evaluated tomorrow morning and go from there.\u201d<\/p>\n Houston signed Wade as a veteran left-handed hitter who projected to play mostly left field against right-handed pitching. It could recall Joey Loperfido or Zach Cole from Triple-A if Wade will miss time.<\/p>\n Sunday, infielder Nick Allen injured his left hamstring running out a hit against the A\u2019s at Daikin Park. He was placed\u00a0on the 10-day injured list<\/a>\u00a0Monday with a hamstring strain.<\/p>\n Action around Alvarez<\/p>\n Two key moments in Rodriguez\u2019s outing involved Alvarez, who began the day leading all qualified major-league hitters in OPS.<\/p>\n After striking out in his first at-bat, Alvarez drove a fly ball to deep center field with two outs in the third. Trout retreated to the warning track and, believing himself close to the wall, jumped to attempt a catch. The ball clanked off his glove. Alvarez motored into second base.<\/p>\n Trout was assessed an error, just his third since 2019. Walker capitalized by lining a double to left field. Alvarez jogged home with the Astros\u2019 first run.<\/p>\n In the fifth, Price doubled with one out\u00a0\u2014 the first major-league hit for the catcher\u00a0who debuted last week<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and took third on a ground out. With two outs, the Angels walked Alvarez intentionally.<\/p>\n Rodriguez made the ploy work. Ahead 2-0 in the count, Walker fouled off a changeup, chased a slider and swung through a fastball at 97 mph to end the inning with the Angels still leading 3-1.<\/p>\n Familiar face returns<\/p>\n Mancini\u2019s run-scoring single in the second came in his first major-league at-bat since July 31, 2023. The veteran was called up by the Angels pregame from their Triple-A affiliate, where Mancini had played in 52 games this season on a minor-league deal.<\/p>\n
