An Oakland man died in the custody of the Santa Rita Jail in Alameda County after suffering some sort of medical emergency over the weekend, the Sheriff’s Office said.<\/p>\n
Jeffrey McMaster, 44, had been in custody since February and died on Saturday, according to the Sheriff’s Office on Monday.<\/p>\n
On May 28, deputies found McMaster in his cell, appearing to experience a seizure. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. On Saturday, McMaster was discharged and brought back to jail.<\/p>\n
During his intake medical screening at about 11:40 a.m., McMaster told guards he needed to use the restroom, the Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies escorted him to the bathroom, but soon heard a noise coming from the cell. Deputies discovered McMaster on the floor experiencing a medical emergency and first responders were called to attempt life-saving measures.<\/p>\n
However, McMaster was pronounced dead at 12:46 p.m.<\/p>\n
The cause of death is being determined by the medical examiner, the Sheriff’s Office said.<\/p>\n
McMaster was in jail on suspicion of murder.<\/p>\n
