Two people died after a chaotic traffic stop in Oakland on Monday involving a stolen car, officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Around 11 a.m., an officer from the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department, a subsidiary of the Oakland Police Department, tried to pull over a car driving \u201crecklessly\u201d near East 12th Street, the OPD said in a statement. When the car didn\u2019t stop, the officer didn\u2019t pursue it.<\/p>\n
The suspect allegedly continued to drive \u201crecklessly\u201d and later crashed into an\u00a0OPD car driving northbound on 29th Avenue at East 12th Street, the OPD said. The OPD officer was taken to the hospital and was listed as being in stable condition.<\/p>\n
The suspect tried to run away but was eventually taken into custody by a housing officer. The suspect was transported to a local hospital and was in stable condition.\u00a0Two other people, who\u00a0KRON4 reported<\/a> were in the suspect\u2019s vehicle at the time of the crash, died at the scene, the OPD said.<\/p>\n A photo of the crash published by KRON4<\/a> shows a gray SUV flipped on its side with severe damage. And a video of the crash\u00a0posted on X<\/a> by\u00a0KTVU-TV reporter Henry Lee shows the OPD car with a smashed front bumper.\u00a0<\/p>\n Police haven\u2019t determined if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, the OPD said.
