The Child Development Center (CDC) is a unique and valuable resource for Bakersfield
\n College students and the community. Located on the north side of the Panorama campus,
\n the CDC helps BC student parents achieve their academic goals by providing childcare
\n services while they attend classes, study for exams, work on final projects, etc.
\n However, the services they offer go beyond providing just a safe space for kids to
\n play, the CDC staff incorporate intentional educational opportunities into their daily
\n activities – so children are learning while having fun.<\/p>\n

Sandra Harrington, or Miss Sandy as she is known to the kids, is one of the teachers
\n at the CDC. She was excited to talk about what the teachers do each day to help the
\n children learn and grow. \u201cWe try to help the children integrate and learn in a hands-on
\n way,\u201d she said, \u201cthe teachers use their creativity to help the kids \u2018learn as they
\n play\u2019 \u2013 that is our philosophy.\u201d The teachers get ideas from the students for themes
\n that they rotate every several weeks. The current theme is outer space, and the teachers
\n collaborate together to incorporate the theme into the lesson plans. \u201cWe brainstorm
\n with the kids and ask them, \u2018What do you want to learn about?\u2019 and that\u2019s where we
\n get the ideas for our themes,\u201d says Miss Sandy, \u201cwe believe in collaboration, communication
\n and teamwork.\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout each classroom there were space themed toys, games, art projects, crafts
\n and more. The children get to express their creativity through various activities
\n like creating space-themed art with painted handprints or recreating the surface of
\n the moon with building blocks. \u201cThe teachers give them the opportunity to create something
\n on their own, \u201csays Miss Sandy, \u201cand the kids respond very positively to it.\u201d Each
\n day, the children are learning about stars, planets, rockets, astronauts, and all
\n things outer space. There are also several space-themed games available that incorporate
\n numbers and letters which add an element of learning when played.<\/p>\n

The CDC also features an expansive outdoor area where kids can run and play, but it
\n also serves as an outdoor classroom where kids can learn about agriculture, insects,
\n science, animals and more. \u201cThe outdoor space provides the opportunity to build their
\n gross motor skills,\u201d says Miss Sandy, \u201cthey get to dance, jump, run, and play in the
\n sandbox. It is a great way to help the kids get their wiggles out. The children are
\n entertained and having fun, but in an educational way.\u201d The outdoor environment also
\n features a variety of activity boxes that encourage the development of fine motor
\n skills through purposeful hand use and manipulation. This includes scissors, viewfinders,
\n blocks, toy insects, and more.<\/p>\n

Rosita Baron, Program Director of the Child Development Center, talked about the services
\n they provide. \u201cWe are not just a childcare center, we are a child development center
\n \u2013 with education in mind,\u201d she says, \u201cwe provide learning opportunities through play.
\n That\u2019s basically what are philosophy is.\u201d Through partnerships and sponsors, the CDC
\n also provides a variety of services that benefit the children and their parents, including
\n breakfast, lunch and snacks for children, dental services, a mobile clinic, tutoring,
\n and more. \u201cWe are trying to be a one-stop shop for BC students and their children,\u201d
\n she says, \u201cthrough our many services, our students don\u2019t have to miss classes and
\n have time to study, go the library, and participate in other academic activities.\u201d
\n The CDC also has its own tutoring center with desktop computers, microwaves, and other
\n resources for student parents.<\/p>\n

Bakersfield College\u2019s Child Development Center is a special program that contributes
\n to student success by giving BC student parents the opportunity to pursue their academic
\n goals while their child participates in an amazing educational program. Their child
\n is not only provided with a safe space to play but are given specific curriculum and
\n activities that stimulate the mind while building a foundation for future success
\n in kindergarten, grade school and beyond. The directors and staff at the CDC all work
\n together to provide an incredible and creative environment where kids can express
\n themselves, learn, grow, and participate in a wide variety of games and activities.
\n A big thank you to Rosita Baron and her dedicated staff for providing this service
\n for our current Renegades, and our future Renegades.<\/p>\n
