San Francisco International Airport<\/a> \u2014 once the state\u2019s crown jewel of seamless air travel, and envy of the nation \u2014 has become a nightmare hub for commuters.<\/p>\n

All down to a new Federal Aviation Administration rule which banned the airport\u2019s famous side-by-side landings \u2014 a move travelers say has turned one of America\u2019s beloved airports into a bottleneck of delays and cancellations.<\/p>\n

The FAA\u2019s decision, which prohibits simultaneous approaches on SFO\u2019s closely spaced parallel runways, forces aircrafts to stagger landings \u2014 even in clear weather. For years, the airport relied on these side-by-side landings to keep traffic moving swiftly.<\/p>\n

The timing couldn\u2019t be worse, as SFO began a six-month runway repaving project<\/a> in March, creating a double whammy for busy travelers.<\/p>\n

As a result, SFO\u2019s maximum arrival rate have plunged from 54 flights per hour to just 36 \u2014 a 33% reduction that airport officials warn could leave roughly 25% of arriving flight delayed by 30 minutes.<\/p>\n

\u201cApproximately one-third of all flights at SFO experienced a delay in April and May,\u201d an SFO spokesperson told The California Post. \u201cWe continue to work with the FAA to improve arrival rates at SFO while ensuring that safety remains our highest priority.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSFO is unusable for regional flights since the FAA shut down the parallel runway. Avoid at all costs. I commute weekly. Trust me,\u201d Kate Rouch, Chief Marketing Officer at\u00a0OpenAI, vented on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe lines are wrapped around the terminal and no customer agents to direct anyone. It is total chaos,\u201d Michael Colbruno posted on X, with a photo of the United Airlines check in area at SFO.<\/p>\n

The sentiment has spread online, where Bay Area travelers are increasingly venting about mounting delays.<\/p>\n

\u201cSFO was the best airport in the country. But since FAA banned parallel landings it has been chaos,\u201d one furious traveler vented on Reddit\u2019s r\/bayarea forum<\/a>. \u201cA lot of delayed arrivals.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe FAA is exploring ways to safely increase the airport arrival rate,\u201d the agency wrote online.<\/p>\n

The FAA did not respond to The Post\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n

Even after runway work wraps up this fall, SFO\u2019s arrival rate is expected to remain lower because the side-by-side landing has been permanently eliminated due to safety concerns.<\/p>\n
