Windy weather challenged crews as they worked to extinguish hidden pockets of fire.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — Firefighters quickly contained a commercial structure fire Saturday evening at an abandoned building that once served as a school in the Florin community, according to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.

The fire was reported around 5:30 p.m. at 8275 Florin Road. Crews from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District and Sacramento Fire Department arrived to find light smoke coming from the structure.

Firefighters deployed hose lines and conducted an interior search to determine whether anyone was inside the building.

According to Metro Fire, crews encountered significant challenges due to hoarder-like conditions throughout the structure. Excessive contents inside the building made movement difficult and slowed access to areas where fire was hidden. Windy conditions also contributed to the spread of fire and smoke within the structure.

Firefighters completed a thorough search and confirmed no occupants were inside.

Crews were able to quickly contain and extinguish the fire, but extensive overhaul operations were required after firefighters discovered hidden pockets of fire throughout the building.

As a precaution, a second alarm was requested because of concerns the fire could spread beyond the involved structure. Additional resources responded to the scene but were later released after firefighters confirmed the fire had been contained.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District is reminding residents to call 911 immediately if they see smoke or fire and to never enter a burning structure, as conditions can quickly become dangerous and life-threatening.
