ANY SACRAMENTO STAPLE FOR MORE THAN SEVEN DECADES IS CLOSING ITS LAST DAY IS THREE WEEKS FROM TONIGHT. KCRA 3’S PEYTON HEADLEE JOINS US FROM THE NEWSROOM AFTER TALKING WITH THE OWNER, PAYTON, AND THE OWNER SAYS THEY’RE THE ONLY SHOP SELLING THOSE SAVORY HAND PIES IN THE CITY AND THAT PEOPLE WOULD DRIVE FROM ALL OVER NORTHERN CALIFORNIA TO GET THEM. BUT SHE SAYS IT WAS JUST GETTING TOO EXPENSIVE TO CONTINUE. THE AROMA OF THE PASTIES THAT ARE EVEN OUTSIDE THE DOOR BRINGS PEOPLE IN. THANK YOU. FOR DECADES, CUSTOMERS HAVE WALKED THROUGH THIS DOOR CRAVING THE COMFORT OF HOME COOKING. ANYONE WHO GREW UP WITH PASTIES COME WHEN THEY COME IN. THEY SAY THIS WAS THE CLOSEST TO HOMEMADE. A PASTY IS BASICALLY A BAKED HAND PIE FILLED WITH MEAT AND VEGETABLES. PASTIES ORIGINATED IN THE MINING COMPANY IN THE MINING TOWNS. THE PASTY SHACK DATES BACK TO THE 50S, WHEN IT OPERATED OUT OF A GARAGE IN MIDTOWN. IT MOVED AROUND A FEW TIMES BEFORE ENDING UP HERE ON J STREET, NEAR 48TH IN EAST SACRAMENTO, WHERE BOBBY MILLER AND HER HUSBAND BOUGHT IT. WE’VE HAD IT FOR 35 YEARS, AND THIS HAS BEEN BY FAR THE TOUGHEST YEAR FOR US, SHE SAYS. BUSINESS HAS GONE DOWN AND EVERYTHING ELSE HAS GONE UP AND YOUR YOUR RENT TO TAXES, EVERYTHING. IT’S JUST IT’S TOUGH FOR A SMALL BUSINESS. SHE’S BEEN RUNNING THE BUSINESS WITHOUT HER HUSBAND SINCE HE PASSED AWAY NINE AND A HALF YEARS AGO, SHE ANNOUNCED THURSDAY. THEY’LL BE CLOSING THIS MONTH. YEAH. VERY BUSY. THE RESPONSE FROM CUSTOMERS HAS BEEN OVERWHELMING, SHE STOLE OUT. ALL RIGHT, NO WORRIES. IT’S BEEN KIND OF OFF THE WALLS. LIKE YOU CAN SEE IF WE’RE TOTALLY OUT OF PRODUCT. IT’S THAT DEDICATION FROM CUSTOMERS THAT MADE THIS DECISION SO TOUGH. THEY’VE BEEN THE REASON WHY WE’VE STAYED AND WHY WE’RE HERE. USUALLY SOMEONE EVERY DAY WILL SAY, THANK YOU FOR STAYING OPEN. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE, WHICH IS SO SWEET. AS THEY CLOSE THEIR DOORS, SHE SAYS SHE’S PROUD OF THEIR DECADES LONG RUN, AND OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS, SHE SAYS SHE HOPES PEOPLE WILL STOP IN AND SAY GOODBYE. SHE DOES SAY, IF YOU WANT TO ORDER A BUNCH AND STOCK UP, SHE JUST NEEDS A LITTLE BIT OF A HEADS UP THERE. BUT THEIR FINAL DAY WILL B

A East Sacramento staple is back after previously closing its doors for nearly two months.
