(KBAK\/KBFX) \u2014 The County of Kern filed a lawsuit against the City of Bakersfield on the sewer rate hike.<\/p>\n<p>According to a release, it said, \u201cDespite numerous efforts to work collaboratively with the City to develop a more affordable and balanced solution for ratepayers, the County determined that legal action was necessary to advocate for rate relief for all Kern County residents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The claim alleges that the City violated the California Constitution by including stormwater costs in the increased sewer rates. According to the approved plan, the city&#8217;s annual sewer rates will increase from $247 to $475 starting on July 1. The rates will then increase by $100 per year, reaching $875 by July 2030.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proposed options the County presented to the City, which included bonds, provide alternative pathways for the City to address infrastructure needs without overburdening ratepayers, a key priority for the County,\u201d said in the release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLitigation is never our preferred course of action, but the County is committed to fighting to keep rates for this essential service affordable for our community,\u201d said Supervisor Phillip Peters. \u201cThe City has a legitimate need to invest in repairing infrastructure, but ensuring costs remain reasonable should always be a central goal.
