There was a slow and steady rise in South Valley highs last week, finally reaching the triple digits at Meadows Field on Friday with a high of 104. Saturday came in with one degree more at 105 and finally Sunday topped out at 104 satisfying the local “heat wave” formula of 3 consecutive days of 100 degree temperatures. This officially kicks off the first “heat wave” of 2026 for Bakersfield.<\/p>\n
With high pressure in the vicinity and its associated very warm airmass it’s looking likely that we’ll return to the triple digits each day through Wednesday. While daily readings will probably fluctuate, according to the latest model data coming in, the hottest day ahead appears to be Tuesday with afternoon highs potentially equal to, or slightly higher than, what we are seeing today after what could be just a very tiny temperature drop-off tomorrow (by a degree or two).<\/p>\n
SIERRA THUNDER CRACKIN’<\/p>\n
Just enough instability and moisture has materialized over the High Sierra for some afternoon thunderstorm activity north of Kern County. This seems to be associated with an early season monsoonal circulation pattern and a weak upper-level low spinning over central California – both of which are not uncommon for the time of year. These showers and storms tend to produce lightning, brief downpours, gusty winds and possibly hail. Look for another chance of that during the next day(s).<\/p>\n
COOLER DAYS COMING INTO VIEW<\/p>\n
Good news if you’re ready for a cooldown: The next one is now in the forecast! It’ll take some time, but model guidance is on board suggesting a weak trough pushing the heat out of the area by late week. There’s a good chance that the South Valley could be back to the mid or even low 90s and at least a possibility of temperatures even lower: potentially peaking in the high 80s by next weekend.<\/p>\n
Either way, the medium-range outlook continues to look dry — but that COULD start to change as we head into the weeks ahead comparing what is “climatologically” probable heading into July: the monsoonal window.<\/p>\n
