Sacramento revises its Vision Zero plan to tackle traffic deaths by 2027, focusing on speed, impairment, and vulnerable road users, amid funding challenges.<\/p>\n

SACRAMENTO, Calif \u2014 The City of Sacramento is taking another look at its plan to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries as it approaches its original Vision Zero goal set for 2027.<\/p>\n

The city released a draft update to its Vision Zero Action Plan, which was first adopted in 2018. City staff say the update comes after several years of new crash data and a renewed focus on two major issues: speed and impairment.<\/p>\n

Several key corridors are designated as high priority in the updated plan, including the intersection of Broadway and Stockton Boulevard. City data shows it is a common location for crashes and incidents.<\/p>\n

The city says it is looking to slow traffic, improve crossings and make the area safer for everyone using the road.<\/p>\n

According to city data from 2018 to 2022, Sacramento ranked among California cities with the highest transportation fatality rates per capita, just above the state average. While the city has made progress on planning and projects, staff say the numbers are still not where they want them to be.<\/p>\n

The update prioritizes vulnerable road users, including people walking, biking, youth and older adults. It also focuses on areas near schools and disadvantaged communities.<\/p>\n

Jennifer Donlon Wyant, Public Works Mobility and Sustainability Division Manager, said transportation funding is one of the challenges when it comes to making roadway safety improvements.<\/p>\n

\u201cTransportation funding is complex, and it takes a while for us to build projects, and it’s very expensive to build projects, and so we have been working studiously to identify and invest in the corridors with the highest number of fatalities and serious injuries, but we need competitive grant funding in order to get the funding that we need to make those changes in our roadways,\u201d Donlon Wyant said.<\/p>\n

She added that part of the reason for the update is that the federal government requires the city to update the plan every five years to remain eligible and competitive for grant funding.<\/p>\n

As part of the draft update, the city will host virtual and in-person workshops and is also seeking public feedback.<\/p>\n
