{"id":365676,"date":"2026-06-18T13:04:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T13:04:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/365676\/"},"modified":"2026-06-18T13:04:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T13:04:08","slug":"e-bikes-and-pedestrians-on-sidewalks-make-a-dangerous-combination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/365676\/","title":{"rendered":"E-bikes and pedestrians on sidewalks make a dangerous combination"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>To the editor: Staff writer Salvador Hernandez\u2019s article offered a good review of the increasing problem of electric or motorized bikes (<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-06-10\/ebike-safety-dangerous-trend-police-concerned\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cCalifornia\u2019s new Hells Angels: Teens on e-bikes cut a path of danger,\u201d<\/a> June 10).<\/p>\n<p>A number of local governments, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.desertsun.com\/story\/opinion\/contributors\/valley-voice\/2025\/02\/23\/fighting-over-the-sidewalk-or-the-definition-of-absurdity\/79336976007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">including Palm Desert\u2019s<\/a>, allow for \u201cbicycles\u201d to be ridden on sidewalks, an important fact that makes them dangerous. Local codes need to be updated to bar motorized bikes of any type, operated by children and adults, from competing on sidewalks with pedestrians.
