An Oceanside man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after police said he struck a 78-year-old woman with his vehicle Thursday afternoon, leaving her in critical condition.<\/p>\n
According to the Nassau County Police Department’s Homicide Squad, the incident occurred at approximately 4:41 p.m. on June 18.<\/p>\n
Detectives said the woman was walking on Long Beach Road and was crossing at the crosswalk at Weidner Avenue when she was hit by a 2004 Chevrolet Express van operated by a 24-year-old man.<\/p>\n
The woman was transported to a local hospital, where she remained in critical condition, police said.<\/p>\n
Following an investigation at the scene, detectives determined the driver, Niall Duignan, 24, of Oceanside, was intoxicated at the time of the crash. He was taken into custody.<\/p>\n
Duignan was charged with driving while intoxicated and second-degree vehicular assault.<\/p>\n
He was scheduled to be arraigned Friday, June 19, at First District Court in Hempstead.<\/p>\n
