A sharp-eyed security guard may have helped avert another tragedy at a Southern California mosque<\/a> just one month after a deadly mass shooting left three worshippers dead.<\/p>\n

The alarming incident unfolded Thursday at the Islamic Center of San Diego, where heightened security remains in place following the massacre carried out by teenage killers<\/a> Cain Clark and Caleb Vazquez.<\/p>\n

According to mosque leaders, a security guard spotted a vehicle repeatedly circling the property and quickly alerted authorities.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur security guard noticed that there was a car passing by multiple times,\u201d Imam Taha Hassane told KGTV<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It happened at the Islamic Center of San Diego on the one month anniversary of the deadly mass shooting at the mosque where three people were gunned down ABC NEWS<\/p>\n

An alert security guard at a Southern California mosque is being credited with potentially preventing a tragedy after police made a stop on a suspicious car. ABC NEWS<\/p>\n

Hassane said officers \u2013 already at the mosque \u2013 immediately sprang into action. He said they notified other cops nearby about the suspicious car and the vehicle was located a short distance from the mosque, per the San Diego Police Department<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThankful for having the officer here at the time, so he did what was supposed to be done, and the response of the law enforcement was done immediately,\u201d Hassane said.<\/p>\n

The car was stopped and officers detained the driver. Inside the vehicle, police said they found \u201ca Nazi flag as well as a suspicious canister.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOut of an abundance of caution, the Metro Arson Strike Team was requested to respond and evaluate the suspicious item,\u201d police said, noting that businesses\/homes in the area were evacuated.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this time, there is no active threat to the Islamic Center of San Diego,\u201d per SDPD, who said the investigation remains ongoing.<\/p>\n

The Imam said with it happening on the one-month anniversary of the shooting<\/a>, it has put both his congregation and the entire neighborhood on edge.<\/p>\n

Despite the disturbing incident, Hassane said his community has slowly started to heal one-month after the deadly mass shooting.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are healing, we are recovering slowly, it\u2019s a process, it\u2019s going to take some time, but we are coming back stronger,\u201d the Imam said.<\/p>\n

In a June 12 message to congregants, mosque leaders said law enforcement has maintained a steady presence at the Islamic Center of San Diego as officials work closely with security experts in the wake of last month\u2019s deadly attack.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaw enforcement maintains a consistent presence at ICSD as our leadership works closely with safety professionals to monitor the situation,\u201d the message said.<\/p>\n

The mosque also revealed it is working with a private security firm to evaluate additional protective measures and is already rolling out interim precautions.<\/p>\n

Among the changes under consideration are handheld metal detector screenings and a policy requiring visitors to leave bags and other large personal items in a designated area outside the building before entering.<\/p>\n

Clark and Vazquez went on a deadly shooting rampage at the San Diego mosque on May 18, killing the Islamic center\u2019s security guard and father of eight Amin Abdullah<\/a>, who police say prevented more deaths, along with two members of the mosque, Nader Awad and Mansoor Kazziha, before turning the gun on themselves.<\/p>\n

The shooters co-authored a manifesto<\/a>, featuring the same Nazi imagery Clark donned in a livestream video of the horrific attack.<\/p>\n

After the shooting, the livestream showed Clark shoot Vazquez twice<\/a> in the head before turning the gun on himself.<\/p>\n

Inside the vehicle, police said they found \u201ca Nazi flag as well as a suspicious canister.\u201d ABC NEWS<\/p>\n

Anti-Islamic writings<\/a> were also found in the suspects\u2019 vehicle, according to a law enforcement source.<\/p>\n

The shooters\u2019 motivations are unknown, though it appears to be a crime aimed at the Muslim faith.<\/p>\n

The California Post reached out to the Islamic Center and the police department for further comment.<\/p>\n
