LONG BEACH PENINSULA \u2014 It\u2019s nearly the Fourth of July, which means it\u2019s nearly fireworks season along this sliver of the Washington coast.<\/p>\n
But as the long July 4 holiday weekend approaches, when tens of thousands are expected to descend upon the Long Beach Peninsula to celebrate America\u2019s 250th birthday, new restrictions in recent years have limited where and when fireworks can be purchased and set off. <\/p>\n
The City of Long Beach on June 16 shared a flier on its Facebook page reminding its 9,000-plus followers that fireworks are not allowed to be set off within city limits. In May 2023, city councilors approved an ordinance banning the sale and use of fireworks in Long Beach after 54% of voters came out in favor of such a ban during a non-binding ballot measure the month prior.<\/p>\n
Ordinance 1015 went into effect in 2024 and prohibits all sales and discharge of consumer fireworks within Long Beach city limits. The ban does not apply to the city\u2019s professional Fourth of July fireworks show, which is traditionally held on the beach each year, as well as other \u201cauthorized public displays\u201d that receive the necessary permitting from the Long Beach Volunteer Fire Department.<\/p>\n
The city affirmed that its fireworks show will be held at dusk on the beach this July 4 and shared when fireworks can be sold or lit off outside of its limits.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe invite you to enjoy the holiday weekend by celebrating safely and respectfully,\u201d the flier states. \u201cTrash dumpsters will be provided on both the Bolstad and Sid Snyder beach approaches. When disposing of fireworks, please be sure they are completely extinguished prior to disposal. We thank you for helping keep our beach and community clean.\u201d<\/p>\n
The City of Ilwaco was the first local jurisdiction to ban the sale and use of fireworks, adopting an ordinance in December 2021 that went into effect in 2023. Like its neighbor to the north, Ilwaco\u2019s ordinance also provides an exception for authorized public displays, such as the annual fireworks show held at the Port of Ilwaco on the first Saturday in July.<\/p>\n
In the unincorporated areas of Pacific County, recent restrictions adopted by county commissioners limit the dates fireworks can be sold or purchased from July 1-4, and the days they can be discharged \u2014 from 12-11 p.m. on July 2 and 3, and from 9 a.m. on July 4 to 12 a.m. on July 5.<\/p>\n
The discharge of fireworks is prohibited within the Surfside Homeowners Association, according to a list of the HOA\u2019s restrictive covenants. <\/p>\n
Fireworks use is allowed on the peninsula\u2019s ocean beaches from July 2-4 in alignment with county rules, but Washington State Parks has stressed that they must be discharged at least 150 feet from dunes and submerged in water before being thrown away.<\/p>\n
Setting off fireworks is illegal on all state park lands, including beaches in front of Washington state parks, as well as forests and wildlife reserves.
