Edward Igoe is a member of the office’s dive team and helped with this recovery mission.

“We made this social media post just to try to give a little bit of a glimpse into what the dive team goes through,” Igoe said.

He said dispatchers received a call from a distressed woman. She reported that her vehicle had “entered the water” near the intersection of Twin Cities and River roads. She was able to safely exit the car, but the real rescue mission was just getting started.

“We knew that the vehicle was unoccupied, but we still need to get that vehicle out just for the environmental impact that having it in the water is going to cause,” Igoe said.

With concerns that hazardous fluids like fuel and oil could soon fill the river, Igoe said responders have to act fast. He added that in the murky river water, rescuers can’t even see their hands in front of their faces.

“The deeper you get, the amount of visible light that penetrates the water gets less and less,” Igoe said. “You couple that with sediment, everything else that’s down at the bottom gets kicked up. It really reduces the visibility to nothing.”

He said there are even larger obstacles too.

“There’s also numerous hazards in the water while you’re going down there,” Igoe said before listing out some of those hazards. “Trees, shopping carts, trash vehicles, obviously.”

He explained how it’s a team effort. There are divers, tenders to help, a communication crew and other roles all leaning on one another. He explained how everyone in the unit goes through intense training to prepare for these types of dangerous, difficult missions.

The sergeant — and diver — said the dive team is working constantly to clear the waterways, because you never know what’s hiding beneath the surface.

“Vehicles go into the water. I mean, every couple of months, and and honestly, in the Sacramento River and surrounding waterways, there’s actually numerous vehicles that have been down there for some time. All it takes is time, money, manpower, resources to be able to get them out.”

The sheriff’s office said California Highway Patrol is investigating how the driver and the vehicle ended up in the water in the first place. The agency did not immediately respond to requests for updates on the investigation. This is a developing story.

    Suggest a Correction

         Close Modal

      Suggest a Correction

(FOX40.COM) –On June 7, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office deputies and their Marine Enforcement Detail recovered a sunken…

[32
121,123,122
post-369875","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sacramento","tag-sacramento","tag-sacramento-headlines","tag-sacramento-news
["GET
