June 22 (Reuters) – A California court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump’s \u200cadministration against Los Angeles over a city ordinance \u200climiting its cooperation with federal immigration authorities.<\/p>\n
U.S. District Judge Fernando Olguin \u200brejected the administration’s argument that the city’s policy was unconstitutional. He gave the administration permission to file an amended complaint.<\/p>\n
The White House did not immediately respond to a request \u200cfor comment on the \u2060decision on Monday.<\/p>\n
Los Angeles city attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto said in a statement on Monday \u2060that the ruling “reinforces the well-established principle that local governments have the authority to decide how to use their personnel \u200band resources.”<\/p>\n
The \u200badministration’s lawsuit, filed last \u200bJune, alleged that Los \u200cAngeles violated federal law by enacting policies barring city resources from being used to aid immigration enforcement operations or collect information about individuals’ citizenship status. The lawsuit came weeks after Trump deployed troops to quell protests in Los \u200cAngeles against deportation operations.<\/p>\n
Olguin on Saturday \u200brejected the administration’s argument that \u200bthe city unconstitutionally tried \u200bto regulate the federal government, finding instead \u200cthat the ordinance “controls the actions \u200bof the City’s own \u200bagents and agencies.”<\/p>\n
The Trump administration has filed several lawsuits challenging similar policies adopted in jurisdictions run by \u200bDemocrats. Federal judges \u200chave dismissed administration lawsuits brought against the cities \u200bof Boston and Chicago.<\/p>\n
