AND IT’S A GOOD TIME TO REMIND THE MEN IN YOUR LIFE TO CHECK IN ON BOTH THEIR PHYSICAL AND THEIR MENTAL HEALTH. AND JOINING US THIS MORNING TO TALK MORE ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF REALLY JUST TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF IS DOCTOR ANGEL MENDOZA GONZALEZ WITH KAISER PERMANENTE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US. THANKS FOR HAVING ME HERE. SO ROUTINE CHECKUPS, WE THINK ABOUT THE PHYSICAL, BUT THE MENTAL IS JUST AS IMPORTANT, IS IT NOT? YES, OF COURSE, OUR MENTAL HEALTH IMPACTS IN MANY WAYS IMPACTS OUR SLEEPS. IMPACTS OUR BODY. RIGHT. WHEN YOU’RE STRESSED, YOUR YOUR BODY, YOUR BODY’S ACHES AND PAINS EVEN GET WORSE. YEAH. AND I KNOW WE WERE JUST TALKING OFF CAMERA A LITTLE BIT ABOUT JUST THE STIGMA WITH MEN. AND UNFORTUNATELY, IT KIND OF REMAINS TRUE OVER THE YEARS. MEN JUST DON’T SEEK CHECKUPS AS OFTEN AS THEY SHOULD DO. THEY KNOW. AND IT’S VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE OUR RISK FOR CERTAIN CONDITIONS LIKE DIABETES, CERTAIN CANCERS. SO IT’S BETTER TO CATCH THEM EARLY AND TREAT THEM EARLY OR ELSE LEAD TO ADVERSE OUTCOMES. WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IT’S STILL SUCH A STIGMA THAT’S SO HARD TO OVERCOME? YOU KNOW, IT COULD BE, YOU KNOW, WE’RE BUSY AS PEOPLE, BUT WE ALSO HAVE THIS FEELING THAT WE’RE GOING TO LIVE FOREVER, RIGHT? AND WE DELAY THE TREATMENT THAT WE NEED. YEAH. OKAY. SO TALK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THESE EARLY SCREENINGS. I MEAN, THEY CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE. OF COURSE. SOMETIMES THESE SCREENINGS ARE IMPORTANT BECAUSE YOU DON’T HAVE SYMPTOMS. YOU MAY NOT KNOW YOU HAVE DIABETES OR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. SO IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT YOU GET CHECKING YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE, CHECKED CUFF MEASURED AT THE OFFICE OR BLOOD WORK TO LOOK FOR YOUR SUGAR LEVELS OR CHOLESTEROL LEVELS. OKAY. SO HOPEFULLY SOMEBODY WATCHING THIS WILL ACTUALLY GO TO THEIR DOCTORS AND SEEK OUT SOME ADVICE AND A CHECKUP. WHAT ARE SOME EARLY SIGNS, THOUGH, THAT YOU MIGHT BE UNDERGOING A CHANGE? MAYBE YOU HAVE A HEALTH, AN UNDERLYING HEALTH ISSUE YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW OF. RIGHT. SO FOR EXAMPLE, FOR DIABETES, IF IT GETS ADVANCED, YOU MAY NOTICE THAT YOU’RE GOING TO THE BATHROOM MORE OFTEN. OR IF IF YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE IS HIGH, YOU START GETTING HEADACHES. IF YOU START IN MEN WITH PROSTATE AROUND THE 40S OR 50S, IT STARTS TO ENLARGE. WE START GETTING GETTING UP AT NIGHT TO URINATE. WE NOTICE THAT WE HAVE TO PUSH TO URINATE, OR SOMETIMES IT FEELS LIKE IT DOESN’T COME OUT COMPLETELY. AND SOME FOLKS ARE JUST GONNA BE LIKE, WELL, I’M JUST GETTING OLDER. SO THIS KIND OF HAPPENS. BUT IF YOU START NOTICING IT RAPIDLY HAPPENING, THAT HAS TO BE A RED FLAG. OF COURSE, YOU KNOW, THERE’S SOMETIMES CERTAIN RED FLAGS, LIKE IF YOU HAVE NOTICE ANY BLOOD IN YOUR URINE OR STOOL, DEFINITELY GOT TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR TO MAKE SURE YOU DON’T HAVE CANCER. OKAY. WE KIND OF TOUCHED ON IT, BUT WHAT ARE SOME STEPS THAT MEN CAN TAKE RIGHT NOW TODAY TO PRIORITIZE THEIR MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH? RIGHT. IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN YOUR DOCTOR IN THE LAST YEAR, MAKE SURE YOU SEE THEM AND TALK TO THEM ABOUT ROUTINE SCREENING, RIGHT? IF YOU’RE HAVING IF YOU’RE FEELING STRESSED AND YOU NOTICE THAT IT’S AFFECTING YOUR WORK LIFE, YOUR WORK PERFORMANCE, OR YOUR LIFE AT HOME, YOU SHOULD CHECK IN AND SEE, SHOULD I SEE A THERAPIST? SHOULD I START MEDICATIONS FOR DEPRESSION OR ANXIETY? DOCTOR, I KNOW THAT WE COULD TALK TO YOU ALL MORNING LONG ABOUT THESE THINGS, BUT UNFO

Kaiser doctor talks about importance of routine check-ups for men’s health

   Updated: 11:41 AM PDT Jun 23, 2026

  Editorial Standards ⓘ

June is Men’s Health Month, which is aimed at encouraging men to focus on their physical and mental well-being.Kaiser Permanente’s Dr. Angel Mendoza-Gonzalez joined KCRA 3 on Tuesday to talk about men’s health issues.
