Gavin Newsom\u2019s push to respond to President Donald Trump\u2019s redistricting efforts with one of his own will go before voters Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Dubbed the \u201cElection Rigging Response Act,\u201d and spearheaded by Newsom and the Democratic state legislature of California, the measure, if passed, would establish a new congressional map for the next three election cycles, potentially flipping as many as five U.S. House seats into Democratic control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Proposition 50 is Newsom\u2019s effort to dull the effect of Republican efforts to redraw maps before the 2026 midterms to flip blue districts in red states \u2014 Texas, Ohio, Utah, Missouri, North Carolina and Indiana have all commenced or announced plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nxslink.newsnationnow.com\/join\/6p1\/signup\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Sign up for NewsNation\u2019s Newsletter;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Sign up for NewsNation\u2019s Newsletter<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Democrats currently control 43 of California\u2019s 52 U.S. House seats and Prop 50 could help them pick up five additional seats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A \u201cyes\u201d vote would approve a new U.S. House map already passed by the state\u2019s Democrat-controlled Legislature, circumventing districts adopted by an independent citizens commission after the 2020 census.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Supporters of the measure saw it as a chance to beat Republicans at their own game \u2014 using redistricting to counter what they saw as partisan gerrymandering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Critics of Prop. 50 argued that it would dismantle safeguards designed to keep elections fair, a power grab that shifts redistricting control from citizens to politicians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Polls close in California at 11 p.m. ET Tuesday.
