{"id":373274,"date":"2026-06-24T17:51:07","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T17:51:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/373274\/"},"modified":"2026-06-24T17:51:07","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T17:51:07","slug":"moderate-earthquake-rocks-northern-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/373274\/","title":{"rendered":"Moderate earthquake rocks Northern California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">SAN FRANCISCO (AP) \u2014 A <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/earthquakes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/earthquakes\">moderate earthquake<\/a> shook a rural area of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/california\">Northern California<\/a> on Wednesday morning, but there were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The epicenter of the quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6, was about 140 miles (225 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was felt widely, including in the fishing city of Fort Bragg. The initial quake was centered inland about 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Fort Bragg at 8:10 a.m. PT, and the USGS said it was about 5 miles (8 kilometers) deep.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Brie Leon and colleagues had just opened Club Calpella Restaurant when the building started shaking, rattling plates and bottles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cI had just turned the open sign on and went back into the kitchen, and that\u2019s when it happened,\u201d she said. \u201cIt almost felt like something hit the building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The restaurant is in Calpella, California, a town about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of the epicenter and in a part of Mendocino County that has been struck by smaller quakes this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Leon said the quake knocked frames off the walls and bottles off the shelves in the stockroom next door. She and other servers were cleaning up not long after to welcome customers for breakfast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t a big, big quake, but things went everywhere,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Andrea Medina, who works at Cafe One in Fort Bragg, said she, too, felt it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThings were shaking,\u201d she said. \u201cBut it\u2019s done, not too strong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">A 2.5 magnitude quake struck near the epicenter a few minutes later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Fawnell Dale, a dispatch supervisor at the Mendocino County Sheriff\u2019s Office in Ukiah, described the shaking as mild and said they hadn\u2019t gotten any reports of any damage or injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Nearly 657,000 earthquake early warning alerts were sent by the MyShake App throughout Northern California, the California Governor\u2019s Office of Emergency Services said.
