{"id":373614,"date":"2026-06-24T22:32:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T22:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/373614\/"},"modified":"2026-06-24T22:32:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T22:32:14","slug":"trump-renews-push-to-change-homelessness-funding-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/373614\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump Renews Push to Change Homelessness Funding Rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump administration<\/a> is renewing its push to change the way it funds homeless shelters and housing in California and other states, and several agencies say it could disrupt their services.<\/p>\n<p>It <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/housing\/homelessness\/2025\/12\/homelessness-funding-lawsuits\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tried<\/a> last year to move federal <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/category\/housing\/homelessness\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">homelessness funds<\/a> away from permanent housing and into temporary housing that requires sobriety. That move, which goes against the existing \u201chousing first\u201d policy favoring a no-strings-attached approach to housing, was <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/housing\/homelessness\/2026\/04\/hud-homeless-lawsuit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blocked<\/a> by a federal judge.<\/p>\n<p>Now, federal housing officials are trying again. Once again, the effort is facing pushback.<\/p>\n<p>This week, a group that includes the National Alliance to End Homelessness and Santa Clara County filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/endhomelessness.org\/media\/news-releases\/coalition-challenges-latest-efforts-to-politicize-homelessness-funding-grants\/?utm_source=Master+Email+List&amp;utm_campaign=73a6604a3c-HUD_LAWSUIT_ANNOUNCEMENT_2025_09_11_COPY_01&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_-c64c3d31f4-669128977\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">challenge<\/a> in Rhode Island\u2019s federal court to the Housing and Urban Development Department\u2019s latest funding guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Trump administration\u2019s callous decision to take a second bite at dismantling one of our nation\u2019s most important homelessness prevention programs after a federal court already blocked the administration\u2019s first attempt shows a complete disregard for the people who depend on this funding to keep a roof over their heads,\u201d Santa Clara County Counsel Tony LoPresti said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>More than $4 billion in federal funding is at stake. The National Alliance to End Homelessness estimates the proposed changes could cost California nearly $238 million for permanent housing, and threaten to put nearly 15,000 Californians back on the street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018housing first\u2019 experiment failed Americans by warehousing the vulnerable without results. This ideology promised to end homelessness.
