Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District officials on Thursday unveiled a new training academy in Rancho Cordova, marking the completion of a project more than two decades in the making.<\/p>\n

The Zinfandel First Responder Training Facility, at 3801 Zinfandel Drive, will serve as the district\u2019s permanent training academy, preparing recruits and other first responders who protect more than 750,000 residents in Sacramento and Placer counties. The inaugural class includes 19 recruits.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis facility represents an investment in our most important asset, our people, but also serves as an investment in regional preparedness, statewide resilience and the future of public safety,\u201d Metro Fire Chief Adam House said during Thursday\u2019s open house.<\/p>\n

The facility features classrooms, a gym, locker rooms and office space, as well as outdoor training buildings.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe challenges facing first responders today are increasingly complex and require training that is realistic, collaborative, and adaptable,\u201d House said. \u201cThis facility represents the next steps toward supporting those needs. It strengthens our ability to train safely, consistently, and effectively. \u201c<\/p>\n

At the entrance to the facility is a bronze statue of a firefighter, part of the Holding the Line Memorial installation<\/a> formerly located at Capitol Park, House said. The statue honors the service and sacrifice of first responders and depicts Rose Conroy, the first woman to serve as chief of a professional municipal fire department in California, House said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat makes it meaningful is more than just the person herself, it\u2019s what she represents,\u201d House said. \u201cHolding the line, it\u2019s about the responsibility shared by every first responder to stand ready, support one another, and answer the call when our communities need us most.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Capt. Mark Nunez, a spokesperson for Metro Fire, the district acquired the statue through a partnership with the Sacramento Area Firefighters Local 522<\/a> labor union and the nonprofit California Fire Foundation<\/a>, which supports the families of fallen firefighters.<\/p>\n

Construction of the facility began in March 2025, according to Nunez.<\/p>\n

Former Chief Don Mette said the facility had been in the works for more than 20 years, after Metro Fire purchased the land from a home builder in the early 2000s. Development of the facility stalled after the economy crashed in 2008, Mette said.<\/p>\n

Rancho Cordova City Councilmember Linda Budge said the city has supported the work of Metro Fire for more than 25 years and was \u201cextremely pleased\u201d the facility was completed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe always support public safety and our first responders,\u201d Budge said. \u201cAnd we\u2019re happy to host them in Rancho Cordova.\u201d<\/p>\n
