{"id":375425,"date":"2026-06-26T04:42:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T04:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/375425\/"},"modified":"2026-06-26T04:42:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T04:42:09","slug":"judge-weighs-witness-in-oakland-daycare-owner-manslaughter-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/375425\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge Weighs Witness in Oakland Daycare Owner Manslaughter Case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">OAKLAND, Maine (WABI) &#8211; A Kennebec County judge heard arguments Thursday in the case of a woman accused of killing an infant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The trial of Oakland daycare owner Lisa Barney has been delayed after court documents showed Barney sent a Facebook friend request to a juror.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Thursday, the court heard arguments about a case from 2007 regarding a prior incident allegedly connected to Barney\u2019s daycare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The question for the court is whether to allow a person involved in that case to testify during this trial because Barney\u2019s defense attorney represented their ex-partner in a divorce case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The state says this could be an ethical violation given Barney\u2019s defense attorney could have information prior to Barney\u2019s arrest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">They believe the matter is prejudicial and expressed concern Barney could raise this as a post-conviction review issue and possibly attack the defense attorney\u2019s representation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The defense says the 2007 case was resolved and didn\u2019t involve Barney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">A judge didn\u2019t make a decision on the matter Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Barney is charged with manslaughter for the death of a four-month old in September of 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WABI.
