BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK\/KBFX) \u2014 Eleven people were arrested and about 1.62 tons of trash \u2014 around 3,240 pounds \u2014 were removed during an encampment clean-up operation in Bakersfield\u2019s Old Town Kern area, Bakersfield police said.<\/p>\n

Officials said the sweep took place Wednesday, June 24, and focused on Baker, Kern, Dolores, Inyo, and Chico streets.<\/p>\n

Before law enforcement stepped in, Be Finally Free, an outreach provider contracted with the city, went to the area to provide resources to people experiencing homelessness.<\/p>\n

The 11 people arrested were charged with public nuisance, illegal lodging, drug paraphernalia and outstanding warrants, police said.<\/p>\n

Bakersfield City Code Enforcement personnel cleared seven encampments. The City of Bakersfield Animal Control seized 10 dogs, and the owners were offered spay-and-neuter services.<\/p>\n
