(KRON) \u2014 The Oakland Animal Services is urgently reaching out the public to adopt and foster, as it says it is \u201cseverely overcrowded with large dogs and kittens.\u201d<\/p>\n

OAS says it is at critical overcapacity with 74 dogs in the facility\u2019s care, leaving no room for incoming animals. The shelter is also caring for 63 kittens available for adoption and an additional 200 in foster care, with more coming in daily.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are counting on the community to step up and help get these wonderful animals into loving homes. Every large dog who leaves the shelter creates a space for the dogs still coming in,\u201d said OAS Director Joe DeVries in a news release\u00a0Friday. \u201cResidents can adopt a pet, and they can also foster, which helps get the dogs out of the loud and cramped shelter environment where they can decompress. If you\u2019re thinking about adopting or fostering, now is the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anyone who us interested in adopting can visit Oakland Animal Services at 1101 29th Avenue, with no appointment needed, on Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from 12:00 p.m. to 3 p.m.<\/p>\n

DeVries added, \u201cBay Area shelters often struggle this time of year due to kitten season, and in the East Bay, Berkeley\u2019s Animal Shelter had a fire and flood damage recently<\/a> and Oakland took in some of their dogs to assist.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ahead of the July 4th holiday fireworks celebrations, OAS is reminding pet owners to keep their pets inside, saying that it often sees a spike of lost pets during this time.<\/p>\n
