One person has died and another is fighting for their life following a shooting at a World Cup fan zone in California. Police confirmed the shooting occurred at a popular entertainment venue in San Jose that had been showing tournament matches.<\/p>\n
No World Cup games were being broadcast at the time of the incident, with the day’s sole fixture in the competition concluding around 2pm local time (9pm GMT).<\/p>\n
“One victim was pronounced deceased on scene. The second victim was transported to a \u2060local hospital with life-threatening injuries,” San Jose police said in a post on social media platform X.<\/p>\n
“This incident is being investigated as a homicide. Several surrounding streets are closed in the area.”<\/p>\n
The Bay Area has hosted five World Cup matches so far – the last being a knockout match on Wednesday between Bosnia and co-hosts the United States.<\/p>\n
There was a heavy police presence in the aftermath of the shooting on Sunday afternoon, with multiple police vehicles and a person on a stretcher partially covered by a white sheet being rushed away from the area by people in uniforms, Reuters reports.<\/p>\n
The scene was sealed off and most bars in the area were closed in response to the incident.<\/p>\n
A security guard who wished to remain anonymous said she saw the injured person in distress.<\/p>\n
“The person was still moaning and groaning. There was blood around his neck and upper back,” she said. “Police were talking to security and a couple of witnesses.”<\/p>\n
