Officials are reminding residents about high-price fines \u2014 as much as $10,000 in some areas \u2014 ahead of the Fourth of July holiday and amid ongoing wildfire risks.<\/p>\n

Sacramento County leaders said increased enforcement is working, as complaints about illegal fireworks were down about 26% last year.<\/p>\n

City and county officials across the Sacramento region are reminding residents about stiff penalties for illegal fireworks during the Fourth of July holiday and fire season.<\/p>\n

Anyone hoping to celebrate Independence Day with a pyrotechnic display face tight guidelines, which vary by jurisdiction. The warnings come as wildfire risks remain high.<\/p>\n

Some areas, like Placer and El Dorado counties, have full fireworks bans in place. Others, including the city of Folsom, allow fireworks but have strict limits<\/a> on lighting them near public parks, bike trails and public buildings like Folsom City Hall.<\/p>\n

The window to sell and buy fireworks in Sacramento County began Sunday and runs through 9 p.m. July 4. In Rancho Cordova and other parts of the county, legal \u201csafe and sane\u201d fireworks can be used from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. The curfew is 9 p.m. in Citrus Heights.<\/p>\n

Violations can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000 in Sacramento. If the illegal fireworks damage property or cause injuries, maximum fines jump to $50,000 and include the possibility of felony charges and jail time.<\/p>\n

Hot and dry July<\/p>\n

The region\u2019s forecasts heading into July feature typically high temperatures and little to no chance of precipitation.<\/p>\n

Wildfire risks have increases outside the capital city, prompting total fireworks bans in parts of Placer and Yolo counties, and across El Dorado County.<\/p>\n

Fire officials have already seen fires escalate quickly in hot conditions where flames ripped through dry landscape.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, a prescribed burn near Winters and Highway 128 got out of control<\/a>, scorching nearly 900 acres. The Putah Fire was contained<\/a> after 11 days.<\/p>\n

\u2018Safe and sane\u2019<\/p>\n

Only fireworks with the Office of the State Fire Marshal\u2019s \u201cSafe and Sane\u201d seal are permitted.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnything that goes up in the air, darts across the ground or explodes is dangerous and illegal,\u201d according to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.<\/p>\n

The consequences of owning illegal pyrotechnics or setting off fireworks in high-risk areas have increased across the region in recent years. Fines are often charged per fireworks involved in an incident and increase with the number of violations. Some of the steepest costs apply to use in the American River Parkway.<\/p>\n

Officials say the heavier enforcement is working.<\/p>\n

Sacramento County declared a \u201cmajor success\u201d in 2025, after fielding 774 complaints about illegal fireworks last year \u2014 a 26% decrease from 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery penalty issued sends a clear message: fireworks are dangerous, and those who use them illegally will be held accountable,\u201d Taylor Parker, senior code enforcement officer, said in a statement.<\/p>\n
