(June 29, 2026) \u2014 Gavin Mundschau, 23, of Bakersfield, is expected to face a felony vehicular manslaughter charge after investigators say he was driving under the influence when he allegedly ran a red light and caused a fatal collision early Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Bakersfield Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 12:06 a.m. on June 28 at the intersection of California Avenue and Chester Lane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators said Mundschau was behind the wheel of a westbound silver Mazda hatchback traveling on California Avenue when he entered the intersection against a red traffic signal. His vehicle collided with a silver BMW sedan that was proceeding southbound on Chester Lane with the right of way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emergency responders found only the drivers inside the two vehicles. The BMW driver suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. Authorities have not yet released the victim\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police determined that Mundschau was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. He sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment before being placed under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following his release from medical care, Mundschau is expected to be booked into the Kern County Sheriff\u2019s Office jail on charges that include vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, according to police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bakersfield Police Department\u2019s Major Collision Investigation Team continues to investigate the fatal crash.
