\u201cFor a Monday, you guys are a great vibe,\u201d she told The Fonda crowd.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Humberstone devoted much of the set to her latest album\u00a0Cruel World, appropriately kicking off the night with\u00a0album opener \u201cSo It Starts\u2026\u201d and falling into \u201cMake It All Better.\u201d The latter is a love song, but\u00a0on this night\u00a0felt like a promise to the crowd that,\u00a0no matter what was happening outside of The Fonda walls, all was good for the next 75 minutes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The mostly Gen-Z crowd upheld their end of the bargain by dancing and singing along,\u00a0likely inspired\u00a0by the 26-year-old\u2019s own stage presence. Dressed in head-to-toe white\u00a0\u2014 a foil to the album\u2019s neo-goth aesthetics \u2014\u00a0Humberstone danced\u00a0too when not commanding a rotating lineup of guitars.\u00a0<\/p>\n
She continued to cement an intimacy throughout the evening \u2014 powered by strong vocals that would shift to soft, breathy confessions as needed (cursive singers wish they sounded this good)\u00a0\u2014\u00a0by pouring\u00a0admissions\u00a0into the mic like \u201cThe house is full but I\u2019m alone\u201d (\u201cThe Walls Are Way Too Thin\u201d) and \u201cThe web that I\u2019m tangled in just isn\u2019t built for two\u201d (\u201cDive\u201d).\u00a0\u00a0While strumming an acoustic guitar, she sang, \u201cWe\u2019ll get drunk and I\u2019ll give you my body,\u201d her accent peeking through at the\u00a0lyric\u2019s\u00a0end.<\/p>\n
Humberstone, after all,\u00a0has cut her touring chops by opening for pop\u2019s modern behemoths (Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, soon Gracie Abrams). She clearly knows having a fun night comes best inspired by love songs and being vulnerable \u2014 and how to steer the audience back to safety when the pit\u00a0verges into a danger zone. Just easing into \u201cRed Chevy\u201d,\u00a0Humberstone paused the show to be sure a fan was\u00a0alright\u00a0and\u00a0then restarted the song (to the delight many).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Later, Humberstone returned for the encore and got especially real: \u201cWe are growing up in the scariest of time\u2026 there\u2019s no rulebook\u00a0about how to be an adult.\u201d\u00a0But it\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0a warning, so much as a promise that her music can be a balm\u00a0through it all, as certified by her next song \u201cLucy,\u201d a track dedicated to her younger sister. \u201cBehind every rain cloud, there is a promise that flowers will grow,\u201d she sings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

By the end of the night, Humberstone proved she\u00a0is\u00a0on her way to\u00a0be\u00a0an artist in full bloom.\u00a0<\/p>\n
