San Francisco actor Danny Glover<\/a> announced Wednesday morning in an interview with “Today”<\/a> that he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.<\/p>\n

At age 79, Glover’s movement, speech and memories have slowed down due to the disease, as he has been living with it for several years.<\/p>\n

“I’m sure as it advances, things are going to be different and changing,” Glover told Lester Holt of “Today.”<\/p>\n

Alzheimer’s disease is the leading cause of dementia in adults, accounting for 60-80% of dementia cases, according to the Alzheimer’s Association<\/a>. It affects over 7 million Americans, with Black Americans diagnosed at over twice the national average. Most symptoms emerge over the age of 65, and average lifespan after diagnosis is four to eight years, although some of those with Alzheimer’s can live much longer. It has no cure, but there are some treatments that can slow symptoms and improve quality of life. The most common early symptom is memory loss.<\/p>\n

Glover was born and raised in San Francisco and attended San Francisco State University, and then trained in acting at American Conservatory Theater. His breakthrough role was in 1985 in the film “The Color\u00a0Puple” playing husband to Whoopi Goldberg’s character. However, his most notable role may be as Sgt. Roger Murtaugh in the film series “Lethal Weapon” alongside Mel Gibson. He went on to amass over 170 acting credits throughout his career and received an honorary Oscar in 2022. Late in life he embraced a meat and dairy-free lifestyle, appearing in promotional videos for the Oakland restaurant\u00a0Vegan Mob.<\/a><\/p>\n
