EDMONTON \u2014 Darnell Nurse<\/a> is done in Alberta\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n

Edmonton traded the defenceman to the San Jose Sharks<\/a> for fellow blueliners Shakir Mukhamadullin<\/a> and Zack Sharp as part of a chaotic opening to NHL free agency Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Selected seventh overall at the 2013 draft by the Oilers, Nurse has 88 goals and 236 assists for 324 points to go along with 725 penalty minutes in 798 regular-season games.<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old from Hamilton has added 29 points (seven goals, 22 assists) in 100 playoff games, including Edmonton\u2019s two trips to the Stanley Cup final in 2024 and 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re certainly trading away a very good player in Darnell who ate up a lot of minutes,\u201d Oilers GM Stan Bowman said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got two defencemen now coming in that are going to be able to bring different elements to the table, but I think all in all it\u2019s going to be a big boost for our defence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nurse has struggled to live up to the eight-year, US$74-million contract he signed with Edmonton in 2021. He had just seven goals and 24 points in 82 games in 2025-26 for the Oilers, who didn\u2019t retain any salary in the swap.<\/p>\n

The Oilers wasted little time spending some of the cap space freed up by the Nurse deal, signing free-agent defenceman Ryan Shea<\/a> to a five-year, $20-million pact.<\/p>\n

Shea, 29, had six goals and 29 assists in 80 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> last season.<\/p>\n

Edmonton then made a bigger splash, signing 36-year-old goaltender Frederik Andersen<\/a> to a one-year, $2.8 million deal.<\/p>\n

Andersen had a 16-14-5 record with a 3.05 goals-against average and an .874 save percentage for the Stanley Cup-champion Carolina Hurricanes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Edmonton then added forward Mathieu Joseph<\/a> with a one-year, $1 million deal. He had two goals and nine assists last season with the St. Louis Blues<\/a> and Los Angeles Kings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Oilers also re-signed forward Kasperi Kapanen<\/a> to a one-year, $2.6-million deal and acquired goalie Devon Levi<\/a> \u2014 and a 2028 seventh-round pick \u2014 from the Buffalo Sabres<\/a> for a 2028 third-rounder.<\/p>\n

Once a top goalie prospect, Levi played this entire past season with the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most important thing was to find a good young goalie that I think has a lot of promise to his game,\u201d said Bowman, adding that netminder Tristan Jarry<\/a> would be back next season.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis most recent success has been in the American League, and I think he\u2019s probably knocking on the door, waiting for that opportunity. So we see a lot of upside in his game.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Sharks added defenceman Jacob Trouba<\/a>, forward Mason Marchment<\/a> and goalie Eric Comrie<\/a> in free agency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"EDMONTON \u2014 Darnell Nurse is done in Alberta\u2019s capital.
