More people<\/a>\u00a0are seeking mental healthcare, yet communities across California continue to face\u00a0a shortage<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0trained\u00a0psychiatrists.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To help meet this\u00a0growing need\u00a0and improve access, Sutter Health\u00a0plans to\u00a0launch\u00a0a new\u00a0psychiatry\u00a0physician\u00a0residency\u00a0program\u00a0in\u00a0the Sacramento\u00a0region,\u00a0training future psychiatrists locally with the goal of expanding access to care across Northern California.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Research shows<\/a>\u00a0physicians often choose to practice near where they complete their training,\u00a0making\u00a0physician\u00a0training programs\u00a0one of the\u00a0most\u00a0effective ways\u00a0to build a\u00a0long-term\u00a0workforce,\u00a0helping\u00a0more\u00a0patients receive\u00a0timely\u00a0care.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe long-term goal is to\u00a0help\u00a0more patients access\u00a0the psychiatric care they need, when and where they need it,\u201d said Dr. Dineen Greer<\/a>, vice president of graduate medical education and\u00a0designated\u00a0institutional official at Sutter Health. \u201cThis program\u00a0will help prepare\u00a0future psychiatrists\u00a0to meet the\u00a0rising\u00a0demand\u00a0while expanding\u00a0care options for patients across the region\u00a0for years to come.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\tSutter\u2019s Growing Graduate Medical Education Programs <\/p>\n

By the end of 2027, Sutter expects to train approximately 575 residents and fellows across 39 accredited programs, reflecting its continued commitment to developing the next generation of physicians and strengthening mental health access for the communities it serves.<\/p>\n

Training Across the Continuum of Care\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0A hallmark of Sutter\u2019s Psychiatry Residency Program is its multi-site training model. Unlike many residency programs, Sutter\u2019s residents will train in hospitals, outpatient clinics and community-based programs serving rural, suburban and urban, communities throughout Northern California, bringing future psychiatrists closer to the communities they will ultimately serve. \u00a0<\/p>\n

By training across diverse care settings, residents gain the experience needed to care for patients with a wide range of behavioral health needs, wherever they seek care.\u00a0The approach aligns with Sutter\u2019s broader efforts to bring care closer to home, including investments such as the\u00a0EmPATH\u00a0center<\/a>, which helps expand access to care in\u00a0more\u00a0remote\u00a0areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOur goal is to train psychiatrists who can meet patients where they are,\u201d said Dr. Joseph Sison<\/a>, medical director of psychiatry at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento and program director of the new psychiatry residency program. \u201cBy experiencing care across multiple settings, residents learn how to provide compassionate, coordinated care throughout a patient\u2019s journey.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\tSutter\u2019s Commitment to Behavioral Healthcare <\/p>\n

In recent years, the health system has more than doubled its outpatient behavioral health physician workforce while increasing access to psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists and other specialized clinicians. <\/p>\n

Sutter has also made significant investments to expand behavioral health services across Northern California, including specialty mental health clinics, crisis care programs, integrated behavioral health services and innovative treatment options that help connect more patients to timely, coordinated care.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Residents will also learn advanced treatment approaches for severe or difficult-to-treat mental health conditions, including electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic\u00a0stimulation\u00a0and ketamine-based therapies. Sutter was the first health system in the Sacramento region to offer\u00a0SAINT protocol<\/a>\u00a0accelerated TMS, allowing\u00a0for more treatment options for patients with complex\u00a0mental\u00a0health needs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Working alongside experienced psychiatrists, residents will see firsthand how care is delivered across different settings and how patients move through the healthcare system, from hospitalization to outpatient treatment and recovery, helping ensure\u00a0the\u00a0patient experience is more\u00a0connected and seamless.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In addition, residents will care for patients in community psychiatry clinics, including individuals living with moderate-to-severe mental illness.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
