{"id":384302,"date":"2026-07-02T23:39:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T23:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/384302\/"},"modified":"2026-07-02T23:39:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T23:39:08","slug":"watch-ending-extreme-global-poverty-is-within-reach-and-we-know-the-price-tag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/384302\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch: Ending extreme global poverty is within reach \u2014 and we know the price tag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jblumenstock.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joshua Blumenstock<\/a> was always interested in being of service to others. \u201cEver since high school, I\u2019ve been interested in working in low income settings to help improve living standards and create opportunities,\u201d he says. \u201cBut my strengths as a scholar were on the technical side \u2014 computer science, artificial intelligence, quantitative analysis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first, Blumenstock didn\u2019t see a straight line between his skillset and those kinds of global development issues, but during his time as a graduate student at UC Berkeley, a path began to emerge. \u201cI started to see angles where the tools that I was good at might provide a different perspective on some of the questions that people had been studying for a long time,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of those questions is: What would it cost to end extreme global poverty? Blumenstock unpacks it in this video, part of our <a href=\"https:\/\/news.berkeley.edu\/topics\/101-in-101\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ongoing 101 in 101 series<\/a> in which scholars explain part of their work in just 101 seconds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blumenstock is now a professor at Berkeley\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/ischool.berkeley.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">School of Information<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gspp.berkeley.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Goldman School of Public Policy<\/a>, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gol.berkeley.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Global Opportunity Lab<\/a> and a faculty co-director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/cega.berkeley.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Effective Global Action<\/a>.
