Fresno Chaffee Zoo has welcomed a new addition to its endangered siamang population with the birth of a female infant to 16-year-old Safiya on June 11.

The zoo announced Monday that both Safiya and the baby are healthy and being monitored by animal care and veterinary staff. The infant is the third offspring born to Safiya and male siamang Noah.

“Safiya is an experienced mother and, as expected, is doing an exceptional job,” General Curator Nicole Presley said. “The two have started bonding on habitat with the other siamangs and orangutans, beginning to establish a normal daily routine with the rest of the troop.”

The mother and baby have made their public debut in the Kingdoms of Asia exhibit but may continue spending time behind the scenes as they continue to bond.

Zoo officials said visitors are most likely to see the pair on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The infant’s name will be announced at a later date on social media.

Siamangs are classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Native to the rainforests of the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, siamangs are the largest species of gibbon. The black-furred primates are known for their loud vocalizations and acrobatic movement through trees, according to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute.

Fresno Chaffee Zoo participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Saving Animals From Extinction Gibbon program, which supports conservation efforts for endangered gibbon species.

Safiya, a 16-year-old siamang at Fresno Chaffee Zoo, cares for her newborn female infant in the Kingdoms of…

[31
112,114,113
post-388612","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fresno","tag-fresno","tag-fresno-headlines","tag-fresno-news
["GET
