SAN DIEGO (FOX 5\/KUSI) \u2014 With more than\u00a060%<\/a> precincts partially reporting, California\u2019s Prop 50 is projected to pass. <\/p>\n

Voters across California voted in Tuesday\u2019s Special Election to decide the outcome of Prop 50, California\u2019s temporary redistricted map to counteract Texas\u2019 redistricting. As a result, five new congressional districts with a democratic majority have been mapped in California.<\/p>\n

San Diego lawmakers have shared both their support and criticism of the new maps following election results. <\/p>\n

\u201cCalifornia has spoken,\u201d San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria posted on social media<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ve taken decisive action to protect our democracy and resist efforts to rig our national election. Our message is clear: we\u2019re tired of chaos in Washington and want a federal government that works for the people, not a president.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Supporters of Prop 50 have maintained that redistricting is necessary to protect democracy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always say that it will take all of us to build a democracy that works and we just took a big step forward thanks to millions of California voters,\u201d Congresswoman Sara Jacobs shared on social media<\/a>. <\/p>\n

San Diego District 48 impacted<\/p>\n

Some Republican lawmakers now find themselves in new districts following the election results. One of these lawmakers, San Diego Republican Congressman Darrell Issa, said he isn\u2019t giving up.<\/p>\n

\u201cCalifornia is my home,\u201d Issa said in a statement. \u201cAnd it\u2019s worth fighting for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Issa believes the new law is a result of a \u201cpartisan campaign\u201d that gerrymandered the state.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know how many of my friends and constituents feel about tonight\u2019s election results and the unprecedented purely partisan campaign that pitted neighbor against neighbor and divided the state as never before,\u201d Issa added.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere\u2019s something Newsom and his cronies don\u2019t know: It won\u2019t work,\u201d Issa added. \u201cThe worst gerrymander in history has a fatal flaw. Voters get to pick their representatives. Not the other way around.\u201d<\/p>\n

Democratic San Diego Councilmember Marni von Wilpert is campaigning to replace Issa\u2019s seat. Von Wilpert believes Prop 50 will help flip CA-48.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith these new lines, CA-48 becomes one of the most competitive races in America, and a must-win seat to flip the House,\u201d von Wilpert said in a statement. \u201cI\u2019m the only candidate in this race who\u2019s proven I can win tough elections, flip red seats blue, and deliver results for working families.\u201d<\/p>\n

Von Wilpert said California\u2019s new congressional maps will also help protect democracy from the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will not let Donald Trump and his allies rig our democracy or silence our votes,\u201d Von Wilpert said. \u201cProposition 50 protects our voice at the ballot box and gives us a real chance to take our country back, starting right here in Southern California.\u201d<\/p>\n

Attempting to challenge Prop 50, Issa filed a lawsuit against the redistricting efforts before being dismissed, according to The Times of San Diego<\/a>. Issa will now have to campaign in a district with a Democratic majority.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going anywhere,\u201d Issa said. \u201cI\u2019ll continue to represent the people of California \u2014 regardless of their party or where they live. I\u2019m not quitting on California. And neither should anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNow that Prop 50 has passed, the stage is set,\u201d Von Wilpert said.\u00a0\u201cAll eyes are on California \u2014 and the path to a Democratic House majority runs straight through CA-48. I\u2019m ready to take this fight to every neighborhood, hold Issa accountable for raising costs and siding with extremists, and deliver a fairer, safer, more affordable future for working families.\u201d<\/p>\n
