Signal, pairing the launch with a founding commercial partnership with creative agency 72andSunny ahead of its inaugural season in January.

The team’s name emerged from a months-long community process that generated 242 unique submissions before thousands of fans voted on three finalists. The club is positioning the Signal as representing both volleyball’s emphasis on communication and the Bay Area’s reputation as a place where ideas and movements gain momentum.

“We didn’t start with a name and ask people to approve it,” S.F. Signal co-founder & President Stephanie Martin told SBJ. “We genuinely asked the Bay Area to help create it and share their own ideas.”

Martin said fan input extended beyond selecting a favorite name. Feedback consistently pointed to a desire for an identity that reflected both the sport and the region’s culture of innovation, optimism and community-building. The club plans to continue that approach through future initiatives, including the development of its mascot.

The launch represents what Martin described as a “next-generation model of ownership,” with an investor group that includes founders, CEOs, Olympians, world champions and business executives who are expected to contribute strategic expertise alongside capital.

“We see our owners as builders,” Martin explained. “They’re contributing relationships, ideas and experience that make the organization stronger. When you’re building something from the ground up, that’s an incredible advantage.”

The organization also announced 72andSunny as a founding partner rather than a traditional agency of record. Martin characterized the relationship as a long-term commercial partnership centered on building the franchise’s brand and community rather than a conventional client-agency arrangement.

Room for all

The organization enters a Bay Area marketplace that is already home to established women’s pro sports franchises, including the WNBA’s Valkyries and the NWSL’s Bay FC. Rather than viewing that landscape as a competitive challenge, Martin said the club believes growing consumer interest in women’s sports creates favorable conditions for another entrant.

“What makes us different starts with volleyball itself,” Martin said. “It’s the No. 1 girls’ team sport in the country, yet until now there hasn’t been a professional team representing the Bay Area.”

Martin also pointed to volleyball’s demographic profile as a key differentiator, noting the league’s audience over-indexes with girls, women and millennial mothers, a segment she said holds significant value for corporate partners because of its influence on household purchasing decisions.

As the franchise prepares for its inaugural season, Martin said the organization’s priorities include expanding its founding membership base, growing season-ticket sales, securing additional corporate partners and increasing community engagement through youth volleyball programming. The club also launched its San Francisco Signal Youth Council, which will give Bay Area residents ages 12-18 input into the team’s fan experience and community initiatives.

Martin said Year One success will ultimately be measured by both traditional business metrics — game attendance, sponsorship revenue, merchandise sales and ticket renewals — and the strength of long-term fan engagement.

“If, a year from now, people don’t just know who the San Francisco Signal is but genuinely feel like it’s their team, and our business metrics reflect that growing loyalty, we’ll know we’ve built the kind of foundation that can last for decades.”

League One Volleyball’s Bay Area franchise officially unveiled its permanent identity Wednesday as the S.F.
