Gov. Gavin Newsom\u2019s return-to-office order<\/a> is now in effect, requiring most California state employees to work from the office<\/a> four days a week.<\/p>\n

The policy, which took effect Wednesday, July 1, marks a major shift from the flexible telework arrangements<\/a> many state workers have had since the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

It affects roughly 108,000 state employee<\/a>s.<\/p>\n

Do California state jobs still offer remote work?<\/p>\n

Despite Newsom\u2019s return-to-office order, not every state job<\/a> requires employees to be in the office full-time.<\/p>\n

Several California agencies \u2014 including departments overseeing insurance, employment development and other state services \u2014 continue to advertise positions that offer remote<\/a> or hybrid work arrangements as of Monday, July 6, according to CalCareers listings.<\/p>\n

State jobs are also known for competitive pay and benefits, including health insurance, paid leave and access to the nation\u2019s largest public pension system<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Most positions require specific education, certifications or work experience, which are outlined in each job posting.<\/p>\n

Agent<\/a> | Permanent, full time<\/p>\n

Department: Alcoholic Beverage ControlLocation: Contra Costa, Shasta, Santa Clara, San Joaquin, Monterey, Los Angeles, San Diego or Orange countiesSalary: $6,339 to $10,609 per monthApplication due date: Until the position is filled.<\/p>\n

The agent performs investigations related to criminal activity committed by licensed premises.<\/p>\n

Duties include developing operation plans and going undercover.<\/p>\n

This is listed as a hybrid position on the CalCareers website.<\/p>\n

Casualty actuary<\/a> | Permanent, full time<\/p>\n

The child nutrition consultant reviews school and child nutrition programs to make sure they follow state and federal rules.<\/p>\n

The job includes evaluating meals, plus providing guidance and training to program operators.<\/p>\n

Claims manager<\/a> | Permanent, full time<\/p>\n

The claims manager oversees teams, supervises managers and helps improve how claims are handled.<\/p>\n

Duties include finding security weaknesses, testing software for vulnerabilities and improving security practices across the department.<\/p>\n
