The two-part display presents more than 400 artifacts from throughout the band’s journey from 1965 to 1995 including instruments, posters, photographs, and perhaps most notably, Ken Kesey‘s famed Furthur bus, Jerry Garcia‘s BMW, and a 1:4 scale replica of the Dead’s Wall of Sound PA system.

Part one of the exhibit, currently on display at the Haight Street Art Center through September 20th, is driven by a vast collection of hundreds of historic artifacts. In addition to the Dead themselves, Forever Grateful will spotlight the work of the “Big Five” San Francisco poster artists whose work helped define the band and the psychedelic era: Wes Wilson, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley, Victor Moscoso, and Rick Griffin.

A highlight of the show is the original 1900 drawing “A Skeleton Amid Roses” that inspired Kelley and Mouse’s iconic “Bertha” skeleton, used on a poster for the band’s September 1966 shows at the Avalon Ballroom and later on the 1971 self-titled live album, commonly referred to as Skull & Roses. Due to the fragility of many of the items on display, objects will rotate throughout the show’s run.

“What originated here in the ’60s and the resulting cultural shift felt across the world will never be forgotten,” Jerry’s daughter Trixie Garcia said in a statement. “There’s nowhere like San Francisco and there’s nothing like the Grateful Dead!”

A centerpiece of the Forever Grateful exhibit is a 1:4 scale replica of the Dead’s iconic Wall of Sound. The fully functional replica designed by luthier Anthony Coscia recreates Owsley “Bear” Stanley‘s groundbreaking audio design with 500 speakers powered by 9,000 watts. Visitors can feel the power of the Wall as multi-track recordings play through the system, recreating the concert experience that defined the Dead’s live shows and revolutionized concert audio in the mid-1970s.

“The thing that really set the Grateful Dead apart from everyone else was its sound,” curator Ben Marks said. “It wasn’t merely a technical achievement—the lack of distortion in the band’s live sound allowed you to fully experience the music.”

Related: Anthony Coscia Recreates A Grateful Dead Legend With Mini Wall Of Sound Project [Interview]

Then, on September 5th, Forever Grateful‘s second exhibition will open at the County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park. The second exhibit will be anchored by Kesey’s Furthur bus and Jerry’s BMW, plus more original artwork, rare ephemera, and multi-media installations. While the Haight Street Art Center exhibit was fueled by artifacts, the Golden Gate Park exhibit will offer an immersive experience into Grateful Dead history. Visitors will interact with performers throughout their Forever Grateful journey, from spontaneous dance parades to intimate exchanges.

Grahame Lesh, son of late Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, will help kick off the Golden Gate exhibit with a free performance in the park on Labor Day, Monday, September 7th. Lesh will perform with an all-star lineup of friends from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Robin Williams Meadow.

“There’s nothing like free music in San Francisco,” Lesh said. “It’s something that the Grateful Dead discovered early on in the ‘60s and something I got to witness and be a part of in the 2020s with my dad as a member of Phil Lesh and Friends. Music is for everyone, and I am honored to celebrate the band’s legacy and history in San Francisco—in Golden Gate Park—with all of you, the wonderful Deadhead community!”

The Forever Grateful Golden Gate Park exhibit will run from September 5th through October 25th. Entry to the Haight Street exhibit is free, while the Golden Gate experience is ticketed.
