Emi Obrero

The Nisei Farmers League will introduce its Dignity Act before the Farmersville City Council at its meeting Monday, July 13.

The Dignity Act is a bipartisan reform bill that aims to address immigration-related issues such as border security and support for undocumented immigrants. The act promotes higher pay for U.S. Border Patrol agents, delays the deportation of eligible undocumented immigrants and requires the mandatory use of the E-Verify program for employers to confirm eligibility for employment.

The act proposes the implementation of the Dignity Program, which would allow undocumented immigrants residing in the U.S. since 2020 to pay $7,000 over seven years to earn legal status and a work permit.

Other changes would include a maximum criminal penalty for the reentry of individuals banned from the U.S., the use of DNA testing to verify familial relationships and the establishment of border campuses to help and manage asylum applicants.

The presentation by the Nisei Farmers League will also list the necessary steps to acquire and use a Dignity Act card, followed by a showing of multiple videos, including endorsements from 2012 Olympian and former world champion boxer Jose Ramirez and Rep. Maria Salazar, R-Fla., who made an Instagram video featuring Manuel Cunha Jr., executive director of the Nisei Farmers League.

Attendees of the meeting will wear Dignity Act shirts to display their support for the legislation. Alma Beltran, the mayor of Parlier and the first rural community city mayor to endorse the Dignity Act in the U.S., will attend as well.

The bill will be introduced in the House of Representatives on July 15.
