Haverland explained the impact of the holiday on the shelter. “The fireworks are definitely not helping our shelter right now,” she said. “We see stray animals come into our shelter every single day, and after the Fourth of July, it is the biggest influx of stray animals that we see.” The shelter has reunited 38 pets with their families, thanks to microchips and collars with tags. “We are seeing a lot of these stray animals being returned to their families because they had a microchip that’s up to date, or a collar with tags. It’s very easy to return those animals to their families,” Haverland said. With the five-day waiting period now over, the remaining animals are up for adoption. “Overall, this year we’ve seen a decrease in adoptions unfortunately,” Haverland said. “All we’re asking is for our community to just walk through and see if anyone catches your eye.” One recent adoption success is Penelope, a 7-month-old dog, who found a new home with Alyria. “I’m so happy that I got her. She’s amazing. She’s beautiful,” Alyria said. Alyria expressed her desire to help more animals. “I do like my community, and I want to help. She did have a brother, and I wish I could’ve taken him, but you know. One is enough, and I’m appreciative of that,” she said. The shelter is running a free adoption promotion through July 19 for spayed or neutered animals. For those who have lost a pet, the shelter urges owners to contact them immediately to check if their animal has been found. “But for the animals that are in there, I feel really bad for them because they’re waiting for their owner and they feel kind of lonely,” Alyria said.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel

      SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Sacramento’s Front Street Animal Shelter is nearing double capacity after taking in 96 stray animals since Sunday, many of which were displaced by Fourth of July fireworks.

“So we have 99 dog kennels here at the Front Street Animal Shelter, and we have about 170 dogs staying with us right now,” said Andrea Haverland, the shelter’s public information coordinator.

Haverland explained the impact of the holiday on the shelter.

“The fireworks are definitely not helping our shelter right now,” she said. “We see stray animals come into our shelter every single day, and after the Fourth of July, it is the biggest influx of stray animals that we see.”

The shelter has reunited 38 pets with their families, thanks to microchips and collars with tags.

“We are seeing a lot of these stray animals being returned to their families because they had a microchip that’s up to date, or a collar with tags.
