CORONA \u2014 A project intended to reduce congestion on the regularly clogged eastbound 91 Freeway between Anaheim Hills and Corona received a federal infusion totaling $25 million, officials announced Thursday.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded one of its Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development \u2014 BUILD \u2014 grants for the \u201c91 Eastbound Corridor Operations Project,\u201d according to the Riverside County Transportation Commission.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith more than 300,000 vehicles traveling Route 91 between Riverside and Orange counties each day, continued investment in the corridor is needed to keep our communities moving,\u201d RCTC Chair Raymond Gregory said. \u201cRCTC appreciates the Department of Transportation for recognizing the importance of this project through the BUILD grant program.\u201d<\/p>\n
The $178 million corridor expansion project remains in the engineering assessment phase, which is expected to conclude before year\u2019s end. A tentative timetable for groundbreaking hasn\u2019t been announced.<\/p>\n
The objective is to construct an additional general purpose traffic lane, starting at the 241 Toll Road connector to the eastbound 91 in Orange County and running three miles to the 71 Freeway connector to the 91 in Corona.<\/p>\n
\u201cImprovements will also include widening two bridges, constructing retaining walls, implementing rock-fall mitigation measures, replacing overhead signs for better visibility and building a new two-lane exit ramp at Green River Road,\u201d RCTC stated.<\/p>\n
There are currently seven lanes available on the eastbound 91, between the 241 and 71, but two of those are toll lanes.<\/p>\n
A westbound lane was added in the area in 2022.<\/a><\/p>\n According to RCTC, adding another eastbound lane will facilitate higher traffic volumes on the heavily used corridor and will complement the recently expanded 71\/91 Interchange<\/a> on the west end of Corona.<\/p>\n The project is a combined enterprise of RCTC, the Orange County Transportation Authority and Caltrans.<\/p>\n
